This is not directly to do with Briercliffe but he is an ancestor of mine.
Samuel Lockett born 1849 Middleton/Oldham Lancashire.
Lived and married in Durham 1871/1872 coalminer
Moved to Burnley, he is there with wife (Elizabeth) and family in 1881 coalminer
1891 she is widow.
I have hunted high and low for his death, with the help of the LFHHS yahoo forum we have found his wife in 1901 living with John Whittaker who was her lodger in 1891.
1920 Elizabeth and John got married shortly before they both died.
I have searched deaths with only Samuel and likewise with Lockett---I must be missing something but I cannot find him.
I have even looked to see if he emmigrated.
Any ideas where else I can look?

Hello Gloria, You've probably eliminated this one, but There is a Samuel Lockett who died aged 42 in the March quarter of 1889 in Stoke ( on Trent ) I suppose. That would make his birth 1847.

It's a popular name in SoT. Where was Elizabeth in 1891?

I can look for a burial if need be....will be a couple of weeks though

Hi you two,
I had seen the one in Stoke and though I cannot see how it could be him I cannot discount it------I have learnt that from past mistakes. He was a coalminer all his life and Burnley had lots of mines in those days, so why would he go to Stoke??
Getting his death cert would probably be the next move. Interesting that it is a popular name in Stoke.
Elizabeth was in Burnley from 1881 census till her death in 1920.
Thanks for the help.

I've just "Googled "Stoke, and apparently there were coal mines there too. My mining relatives in the mid 1800's moved from Yorkshire to the Midlands, to Northumberland, and then ended up in Burnley.

The industry in Stoke was mainly pottery (which is why we are called 'the Potteries') but we mining has also been big business throughout the city.

If you were to order the certificate, what is going to confirm it's the right one? Back then it'll be the informant that is the give away and if his wife didn't travel with him? Unless she did and then went back to Burnley after his death?

I thought that Mel, they had quite a large family so I would doubt they would all have gone with him, but then--why not, they came down from Durham with children. I suppose they could have moved and after his death she would have gone back to Burnley where her grown up children were----they were cotton weavers so would not have gone to Stoke.
I have just done a search on ancestry for Samuel Lockett born Stoke, there are two born 1846 and 1847 so that Samuel could be one of those.
There are also two deaths, the one we have found and another in 1919 born abt 1848 so I think they cancel each other out.
Looks like mine followed yours Gill, what a long way to go in the 1800s'.
Think I have the makings of another headache.

I know everything points to him having died but don't discount the fact that he could be living and that they separated. I have a 'widow' who actually died before he did but some 30 years after declaring herself a widow. He then remarried within weeks of her death. They did live apart for those 30ish years though.

I thought perhaps that Mel, but still cannot find him anywhere.
On the 1901 census Elizabeth is down as a widow, 1911 census Elizabeth says she has been married for 9yrs (John Whittaker 2nd husband) but there is no sign of the marriage. 1920 a John Whittaker marries Elizabeth Lockett in March qtr, she then dies in June qtr and John the year after. They were then in their 60s.

According to the Lockett/Whitaker marriage details on LancashireBMD, Elizabeth was also a Holt. Probably prior to marrying Samuel Lockett? Does this tally with your file Gloria?

Yes it does Mel, she was Elizabeth Holt before marrying Samuel Lockett.
One thing to come out of this search is that I have found out more on this family which I had been ignoring for quite a while. One of Samuel's sons my gt grandfather died in Burnley Union Workhouse 1906 aged 32yrs. Samuel's father also died there in 1896 aged 70yrs, his wife had died 3yrs before, they weren't in the workhouse then. Very sad when I think grandma never mentioned her father.

The fact that Elizabeth didn't marry John until 1920, despite being under the same roof, would suggest to me that Samuel may still have been around somewhere. It's just a matter of where!!

Out of curiosity, have you tried the wills for the Samuel Lockett who died in SoT?

Working on the ugestion that she wasn't actually a widow, I searched for Samuel to see whether he came up in a census after 1881 - but could't find him.
I did find another Samuel Lockett on 1881 in Gateshead, b Lancashire 1846. He's a boarder, desribes himself as married.
It did lead me to wonder whether they were the same person put on the census twice by mistake.
All of which aids the search not one bit I'm afraid because the Durham line seemed to fizzle out after that anyway. Sorry.

The death cert of Samuel's son arrived today. James died 1906 and the informant was J Whittaker stepfather----I don't think you have to give identification when you register a death, I cannot remember doing when I registered my Dads. So they could just be married in name only and decided to legalise it in their old age. All very odd.
Maureen I got excited when I read what you'd found, but I couldn't find him again either, so no explaination for that.

Mel, no luck with the wills. From what I have learnt about the family they wouldn't have had anything to leave in a will.
