Found his grave and the plot thickens
Grave: 4471 Burnley Cemetery, Burnley, Lancs.
Burials in this grave:
Name Age Abode Gender Source Register Date buried
1 William Sagar 1yr Park St M Book 4 #28251 23 Apr 1885
2 Margaret Ellen Sagar 3yrs Parker St F Book 5 #29815 3 May 1886
3 Sutcliffe Sagar 1yr 4mnths Sandy Gate M Book 5 #34010 6 Oct 1888
4 Richard Sagar 31yrs Parker St M Book 6 #38713 16 May 1891
5 Samuel Sockett 44yrs Adelphi Street M Book 9 #67095 10 Jan 1907
6 Duella Sockett 70yrs 118 Briercliffe Road F Book 13 #97392 5 Jul 1927

I have found Duella in 1901 living in Adelphi St, married, son Richard 8yrs and step children Priscilla Sagar 15yrs and Sutcliffe Sagar 12yrs. The S in Sockett could easily be an L.
Just when I thought I had him I have found a marriage of Samuel Sockett 1891 and on same page is Duella Sagar------ I wonder if Samuel got divorced from Elizabeth??
His death cert isn't going to tell me much now is it, Duella probably registered the death :?

Found her. She originally married a Richard Sagar.
She married Samuel Sockett in 1891 though I don't have the full details (never looked for them?) She is in my file because she is a Sutcliffe but she is one of the ones who is floating and not yet tied to my tree.

Not sure if the rulings for 1911 still apply so won't put full details - Duella is listed in Victoria Hospital as Quella Sockett. She claims to have been married for 29 years but this would go back to her marriage to Richard Sagar in 1881. 5 kids, 2 died.

The reason she is not tied into my tree is because I only have details for her mum - no dad. Mum was Ellen Brunton but she has always been a Sutcliffe. Not bought wedding certificates so no idea of dad.

Everything I have seen for Samuel has been Sockett so he is in my file as Sockett but I do have their son Richard in my file as Lockett. Probably due to the census return?

Looks like I am getting another headache then :(
I think it loosely points to my Samuel, I don't think it gives occupation on death certs does it? that could be more of a clue as my Samuel was always a coal miner. I suppose if he died of a respiratory disease??? but that's more supposing.

Taken from LancashireBMD

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1881
SUTCLIFFE Duella SAGAR Richard Burnley, St Peter Preston CE111/8/492

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1891
SAGAR Duella SOCKETT Samuel Burnley, St James Preston CE110/2/404

Neither marriage is on Lan-opc. Are the St James records at Preston?

Another thought - will Burnley cemetery have an occupation on file?

They are at Preston. Looks like a day out there is in the offing. I don't know if Burnley Cemetery would have the information of the occupation.
I wonder why they went to Preston to get married, could be a bigamy situation but then you wouldn't have thought they would go back to live in Burnley. They certainly didn't hang about as Richard was buried on 16th May 1891 they got married Sept qtr 1891.

They didn't marry in Preston - they married at St James, Burnley. Preston is part of the reference code at the end of the index entry.

I'd be dangerous if I ever engaged my brain  I hadn't read it properly
Elizabeth (Samuel's wife) had a son Joseph in March 1891, on the death cert it does not give a father's name, I presume Samuel had left 9months prior to that at least. There was another son born to Elizabeth in 1887 if he has/not got Samuel as father it would narrow his leaving down. But that wouldn't answer the question if Duella's Samuel is mine.
John was baptised 15th April 1891 at St Peters Burnley. It just gives the name of his mother.
Joseph (1891) was baptised at the same time.
Job (another son) was baptised 1885, it just gives name of mother.
Margaret was baptised 1880 and it gives the name of both Samuel and Elizabeth, and he was with them in the 1881 census.
So he went between 1881 and 1885.

I believe this is Duella's father and siblings in 1861 - I think her mother, Ellen, died in 1860. I checked the births of the siblings on the LancashireBMD site and it gives mothers maiden name as Brunton

1861
RG9/3068 Folio: 60 Page: 32
Newcastle Street, Burnley
SUTCLIFFE, Joseph Lodger Widower M 27 1834 Cotton Weaver Baildon, Lancashire
SUTCLIFFE, George W Lodgers Son M 3 1858 Burnley, Lancashire
SUTCLIFFE, Mary A Lodgers Daughter F 1 1860 Burnley, Lancashire

The birthplace of Joseph means I can now omit this family from my file as being no connection

So we are not related then through these people!!! should we be pleased.
I have never found Samuel in the census either after 1881 when he was with Elizabeth. I think this man may have to stay as one of my tree's great mysteries.

Hi,

The marriage of Samuel Sockett and Duella is on family search - he was 28 and his father George Sockett. I wonder if he is the one on the 1871 and 1881 census born Burscough 1862/3.

Duella Sutcliffe was my 2 x GT Grandma, and her 2nd husband Samuel came from burscough and his parents Liverpool ( he is the one on the 1871/ 1881 census)
I have only been able to find him marrying Duella and having 1 child Richard who went on to be a merchant seaman and lived in Lambeth London up to 1937. Hope this helps I'm not good at forums
