Post subject:  Hamer's Terrace Briercliffe Rd Burnley
In the 1871 Enumeration District No 20 (folio 56-81 Page 12-15) it quotes a "Hamer's Terrace". This terrace is also mentioned in "Burnley's Hidden Corners". I suspect it was demolished and replaced by the Baltic Fleet Inn. Can anyone confirm this and/or possibly pinpoint its exact location on Briercliffe Rd.

Hamers Terrace is listed in Gutteridges Street Directory of the 1950`s - 60`s. The Baltic Fleet date stone is 1895, so it wouldn`t have been demolished to build the Baltic Fleet on, unless of course there was an earlier one, which I now think there may have been.

Mo, I can't fault your logic. Hamer's Terrace appears in a number of those pocket directories but is listed simply as Briercliffe Rd. (no number given). The old maps show a block of back-to-back houses just below what is now the Baltic Fleet. These have been replaced by a standard terrace (no 36 - 46). The 1890 Barrett's directory jumps from 34 to 42 missing this block out.
Perhaps the only way to resolve this is to trawl through some of the census returns and see what is happening in this area.

Don't know whther you noticed but the end house was a shop owned by Mrs Hamer. Maybe tht's where Hamer's terrace got it's name.. Or am I stating the obvious?

The Baltic Fleet was no 48, the Old Duke was no 54. This doesn't pinpoint Hamer Terrace, but may help narrow it down at some point.

Is it possible that it ws actually on Colne Road, at the bottom of Brierliffe Road?
Gutteridge's Street Directory lists it as being 'on or near' Briercliffe Road and the address as 129 Colne Road.
If you work through the 1871 census, page by page, it seems to be working its way along Colne road which for a stretch it calls Old Duke Road. It makes detours off down the odd side Road but keeps coming back to Colne Road.

Thank you Maureen for taking such an interest. Through lack of forethought I let my Ancestry (census) subscriptions lapse and I have to resort to the library for this type of exercise.
I tend to favour your idea about Mrs Hamer. In some of the old census enumeration listings I've long suspected that if the enumerator didn't know the exact address he used a named resident. To confuse things; over the years the house numbering on Briercliffe Rd has changed. This applies especially to the even numbers. Current numbers 16 - 34 and 66 - 84 are older houses with watershot stone. numbers 36 - 46 are a later narrower stone construction. As you say the area between The Baltic Fleet and what is now Brierleys have gaps in their numbers. What is your best guess for Mrs Hamer in todays numbers?

I spent the afternoon writing down all the Head of Households from Hamers Terrace in 1871 and then finding matches on the 1881 in Briercliffe Road :roll:

Three match on the 1881 census for Briercliffe Road included the spaces between the individual households if you see what I mean, It was just enumerated from the opposite end.
At no. 62 Briercliffe Road was the Widowed Hannah Hamer who was the wife of Smith Hamer in 1871. No. 72 Briercliffe Road was Reuben Latham and at no. 80 would have been Martha Hamer if she hadn`t died in 1879. Her daughter was still there and a 1879 directory confirms that Martha Hamer, Grocer lived at number 80. I also found a baptism on Lan-opc for an Emma Hunter of 68 Hamers Terrace, Briercliffe Road in 1892.

So my theory for what it`s worth would be the block above the Old Duke.

Mo and Maureen. Between you I think you have solved my problem. Although there is no formal "Terrace Plaque" as ref" "Old Duke Terrace 1889". I think we can safely say that numbers 66 - 84 may be called "Hamer's Terrace". Thank you both for all the time and effort that you put in on my behalf.
