Does anyone know what ppe stands for in the context of early parish records?

I have been looking at the Colne St Bartholomew baptismal records for 1727-31 when Latin was still being used.

In some but not all cases, the letters ppe appear after Abode and before the place name, e.g.,
Abode: ppe Barrowford

Don't quote me....it's possible it means named. This is from doing a google translate from Latin to English.

Thanks Mel. Sounds much more plausible than 'personal protective equipment' which is all I seemed to be able to find!

May I hazard a guess at "Post Pardum Exor" Meaning "After birth executor" as in wills etc;. I would think it applied to children where someone else was taking charge.
Like Mel don't quote me. My Latin was abysmal.

I think it is an abbreviation for 'prope', meaning 'near'. Using OPC, it only seems to be the odd entry. I found, just glancing, 'ppe' Barrowford, Colne, and Catlow. 'Near' Barrowford is a bit odd perhaps, as Barrowford was the name given to one of the 'townships' of Colne chapelry, or, rather, a booth of Pendle Forest. Perhaps it meant 'somewhere in the general area of', the writer not knowing exactly where.

John Bentley's 1990 printed version doesn't give 'ppe'. Also, I didn't find any examples in the printed book of 1599-1653.

Rex, thanks again for your input. Prope meaning near does seem very likely. I had also wondered today whether there might be a link between ppe and the word propinquity - which would tie in with what you have found.
