Anybody had any good results from a visit up there?

I have been searching records for Carlton in Craven Church.

On the family search web there are gaps which I managed to fill in with a couple of names from a document transcribed by a volunteer at Skipton library.

If she read the records somewhere how have they missed them on the Family Search?

Could it be the writing is too difficult to read, it is pre 1770, after that the records seem more complete.

Anyone know if Bishops transcripts are more legible and would I find them for this area up at Northallerton.

I'm not going 'over the border' unless I'm sure about the results.

have you tried e-mailing Skipton Library, if they can't help you they could possibly point you in the right direction.
What are the names? You never know what someone else might find.

Northallerton holds I think just (or mainly) the old North Riding registers, though maybe additionally now those parts of the modern North Yorkshire, the online catalogue should say.

The BTs are I think still with the Borthwick Institute in York.

If anyone is going to Northallerton and has a bit I time to spare, I would love to see if they can find a couple of events that I reckon may have taken place at Askrigg (WARRINER)....... in hope !

The records for St. Mary pre 1770 (and after) are on Ancestry as part of the West Yorkshire records.

Thanks everyone, I had worked out that by train it would take three hours each way, I could do a little trip to London in that time
but spend more of course.

I will have a look Mo, probably get lost on Ancestry as usual, but she who muddles through, wins ( I think)

What are the names Hannah? Two heads are better than one, I will have a look on ancestry as well.

Thanks Gloria, I think you are right, I'm suffering from a very bad head cold ( the kind our menfolk need private nursing for )and I'm a bit woolly headed.

It's my Thistlethwaite branch yet again.

There is a record of John Thistlethwaite
his son William b.1730 m. Hannah Sergeant in 1751
their daughter Sarah m 1773 to John Slingsby
and there is record of their 6 children from 1773 onwards.

At Skipton library I also found a ref. to a George who married a Sarah Heaton 1722 in Carleton
George died 4.11.1768
Sarah died 19.12.1772 both in Carleton

It seems odd that John has only William recorded and no other children? Also a s Williams daughter appears to have been born there, no siblings reported?

This is probably another wild goose I'm chasing but a fresh look may see something I'm missing.


George may have been John's brother???

Another thought about these Thistlethwaites.

An Ann Thistlethwaite died in Newchurch in 1822 age 90 + ( she lied a lot about her birthday, don't we all )

Would she be on the 1811 census???? and which library would I need to go to to find out who the lady was living with in either Newchurch or down the road in Fence, Wheatley Lane area???

There may be a link that I havn't thought of if I can trace her movements.

Just reaised there would be no records for 1811.

Lesson to be learnt for me, don't try to put messages on the website when you should be in bed and asleep!!!

Thanks Gloria, but I have found these but they don't match up or link up, the names run in the family, but they were common names in those days

People who do this for a living have my endless admiration, the places and names are familiar if you live near by but a stranger must get very frustrated, yes we all do I know, so close to a clue, but, so far.
