I received a copy of a will, written in 1807, last week that confirmed an ancestor and his family. The will had two codicils, the first of which leads me to wonder the whereabouts of an Indenture. The will mentions the Indenture and the date of it and the other two names on it. They are Thomas Lord Ribblesdale Baron and John Peart. It is dated 1811.

I have searched the Lancat as well as the new 'Discovery' formerly Documents Online (really don't like the new format for this but that's another story!) and also looked at Access to Archives. I find mention of the two names but not with my Joseph Sutcliffe.

Any suggestions please?

Not being an authority on wills etc but, I wouldn't read anything into the fact Joseph is not mentioned with them, they are probably entirely seperate from him. Was the will Josephs? Did he farm land owned by one/other of the two?
I googled both names and came up with "Conveyances of Haslingden Glebe", but you will have found this.
Sorry not much help.

Thanks Gloria

The will was Josephs. He originally wrote it in 1807, made a codicil in 1811 and another in 1817 (or 1818) and then died in 1820.

The reference I found named a Chris Hanson (off the top of my head) of Roughlee. Same year but I suspect a different document to the one I am looking for. The Ribblesdale and Peart men were both from West Riding. I am hoping the indenture will make some mention of Lower Fulshaw or nearby.

Thomas Lord Ribblesdale Baron is of Gisburn Park, which is not that far from Lower Fulshaw, Pasture Lane as the crow flies. Could he possibly have been Joseph's landlord?
You will already know that Pasture Lane runs from Barrowford to Roughlee where Chris Hanson is mentioned.

This is Barrowford Johns page where he mentions all the documents giving the names and the Roughlee connection http://www.barrowford.org/page24.html

Hi Mel,

Sorry I can`t help with the indenture, but I do have copies of the Doreen Crowther file from Colne library on the Sutcliffes including the pedigree files that she drew up. If they are of any use let me know. I go cross eyed with all these Sutcliffes! My husband is descended from Oddie Sutcliffe Snr.

I have the Doreen Crowther files too Mo but thanks for the offer. If I get far enough back, I think Oddie and my lot will be related....IF!!!

Mel
Is it Thomas Lord Ribblesdale (Baron) or is Baron his actual surname?

No idea, the document has no punctuation (do any of them?)
I have since discovered something about 1811 tithes for the area relating to Lord.... so I suspect the Indenture is tithe related. It was something I started to read as I was getting to tired to really read last night so only bits stuck. Intend to re-read the same page(s) later.

I googled it. It appears he was Thomas, Lord Ribblesdale, a baron. Is this of any use?
