Does anyone know anything about The Hole (variously Hole, Hoyle, Th'oyle) which turns up as the abode of some of my Trawden ancestors? From the ordering of the census returns, it would appear to be near Naze End (Knaze End), which I have located and where other of my ancestors lived. I have not been able to find The Hole on the maps I have looked at.

Hi Ruth,
might be worth an e-mail to Colne Library, I am sure they will point you in the right direction.

Thanks Gloria. Good idea! I've sent them an email this morning. Living in London I don't know when I'll next be in Colne.

Let us know where it is when you find out.
Just asked other half and he said he'd heard of it but didn't know just where it was

FOUND IT

Put in Trawden then 1913-1914 map from the right hand side, enlarge and it is just up from the bottom centre. It's on the 1930 map also, a bit clearer.

Brilliant! Thank you Gloria. It seems that Hole is now part of Oaken Bank, where I have also had ancestors.

I get the impression that many of my Trawden ancestors looked no further than a couple of hundred yards to find a spouse!

I think a lot were the same in these outlying areas. There must have been some very strange people about once upon a time.
