Could anyone tell me if there is available a map or extended plan to help me find my way round all those 1841 - 1891 census locations that merely say "Haggate", or "Cop row" - which I have managed to locate - or the more exotic "Pig Hole" New Ground near Pasture" "Ash Hole" etc within the Briercliffe/Haggate/Lane Bottoms areas?
I've really tried, trailing along the main roads on maps, trying to plot out the locations of various households at various censuses but I get the feeling that a great many of these places are not easily identifiable - and they are just a very few of the ones in my "collection" - that I'd really like to be able to pinpoint the exact location of (that sounds bad English, but I'm sure you know what I mean). Many censuses seem simply to state "Hag gate" for the whole area, and even with the printout of the written census route, it's too hard for me.

Is this link of any use? http://www.britainfromabove.org.uk/

I don't know of any online resources that might help...I have a feeling there is one but it's name fails me at the moment. The other alternative is perhaps an Alan Godfrey map if one for the area is available. They are about £2.50ish I think.

Thanks for that - it's not really quite what I was looking for - I really wanted to find out more details of the various areas within the area. I'll have a look in my local bookshop for the Alan Godfrey publication. I just want to get a better idea of how close / far apart etc., all the people concerned would be living, not quite clear from the censuses itself.

There is a map in Rogers "A Lancashire Township" which gives the locations of the old farms. I don't know if it could be put on here......Mel?????

Are you thinking of this one Gloria? http://briercliffesociety.co.uk/Photo%2 ... Glance.htm

It's not to scale or anything but it does give a rough idea for the farm type properties.

Wow! that's a whole lot better than I'd managed to find before! I'll be able to work out how close some residences were to others by using that in conjunction with an O.S. map of the area. Thank you. ..... from the two I'll be able to draw exactly what I want. wonderful!

Oh! That's great. I wasn't expecting that to be of help - I thought it might be too vague.. :D

Well remembered Gloria!

If there's anywhere you can't find, ask the question on here, I'm sure someone will pinpoint it.

I took the map, printed it out as large as I could, which of course reduced the quality, and laid it approximately over a fairly modern OS map, with tracing paper, slipping that too and fro, to try to reconcile the places, and simplify the images - that worked quite well. I forgot to say I have some of the "Godfrey" maps, but don't seem to be able to find one that covers the right area.
It's places like exactly where is "Cop Row" - seems a long set of terraces on map, "New Row near pasture" "Pig hole" "Ash hole" etc that are hard to pin down .... goodness, two of those last three sound very salubrious places to live, don't they?
-Quite a lot of effort - but "better than nowt" as I'm told to say! Thanks again, ladies.

Cop Row was a long row of terraced cottages, then a few were knocked down to make way for Saxifield Street. They run between the Commercial Public House and the Craven Heifer.
Pig Hole Barn I think, can be found on right move.

New row near Pasture.

Same as Cop Row. Sometimes just New Row. Also Long Row. Built about 1819.

Rex

PS 1848 six inch map (OS) could be best bet. Burnley library.

Now, that helps quite a lot - I'd been hunting for that "New Row" for ages. Ah well, back to the pointy pencil and tracing paper. Thank you again.
