Can anyone help and advise me as to how I can trace the early history of a property and the name of people who lived in it. The property in question has records dating back to 1740 but no family names. It was a farm back then and would probably be know as Lower Reedley Farm in Reedley. It was divided into two cottages in the 1800's and is now 43 and 45 Reedley Drive. Back in 1700's it would be the only property for miles around and I am trying to find out what kind of farming was carried on and to trace the occupants movements during the time up to 1900. Colne library has some volumes created by Gladys Whittaker on the history of properties in the area. Not sure if yours will be in the area covered. Worth a look, or enquiry to the librarians. Gladys used deeds, manorial records, etc Try Lancat, the Lancs Archives index. Also Discovery, the National Archives index. Census from 1841 of course. Worth a look in Bennett, Burnley and Marsden. Parish registers, online, for Burnley, Colne, Newchurch, might bring up place name entries. This all off the top of my head ! I could probably do some of these look-ups if you aren't sure. Rex |

Sorry to be so long replying, I have been in hospital of late. Most of the registers you might need are transcribed on the Lancashire online parish clerks website. Also on Ancestry, with images. Good luck, Rex |
