Does anyone know where armed forces war deaths are registered? I have 2 1st war deaths, with dates, that aren't coming up on bmd. (I have been able to find them on the war graves site). Which makes me wonder whether there was a separate registration system or even none at all.

I also have 2 2xgreat uncles (brothers) who just disappear without trace - one after the 1891 census and one after 1901. As one of them is called Zenas you'd think they'd be easy to find! If they went off to the Boer War, and didn't come back, would there be a record anywhere?

Hi Portia
Have you any idea what regiments they served in?
David

WW1 war deaths are separate to the deaths on freeBMD. Maybe you can find the people on this site http://www.findmypast.com/MilitaryChooseSearchType.jsp

Since I posted the question I 've spoken to a friend who wrote a book about men from his area who died in WW1. He tells me he's seen the military casualties register when it was in Somerset House.
If they aren't on BMD, and the Family Records Centre is now closed, it does make it more difficult to trace these people.
David, I do know the regiments involved but in fact I don't have a special interest in the two individuals I have death details for. I was just using them to test the system because I had enough information about them to do a comprehensive search. (Hope that makes sense to someone besides me).
