In the photo archive there is a postcard picture of Whittlefield, showing umpteen mill chimneys.

Can anyone identify from where it was taken, what are the mills in the foreground, etc ?

I have an idea, trying to match it with the large scale 1895 OS map.

Which group of photos does it come in Rex, I can’t seem to find it?

I can't find it directly on the site. However, do a google search for 'Whittlefield' and 'Burnley'. Go to the Images.

Think it’s taken from Gannow Top on the large track of spare land behind the pub (Derby Arms I think). It’s all houses and M65 around there now.

But no mills, surprisingly, close to Gannow Top, Whittlefield way. I thought the two mills in the foreground, seemingly parallel, might be Cairo on the right, Albion on the left. The canal running in front. Then other mills clockwise round in a ring. The streets fit quite well, particularly the parallel ones on the right with another parallel set at right angles on the left.

The photo would be taken from Whittlefield rec.

But I may be totally wrong ! Who might know ? Roger Frost ? Can we ask him ?

The picture I’m looking at has the gasometer over to the left, the church to the right I think is no longer there, I think the photographer is high up looking over Whittlefield.

Ah, a different picture I think. Mine has white capital lettering bottom left, 'WHITTLEFELD' (note the error), and 'BURNLEY ' bottom right.

My nephew, who is a whizz with maps, came up with the same two mill names without prompting. He like me was born in Burnley.

I'm not sure whether the plot has thickened or diluted. Anyway, interesting !
