I'm researching my great-grandfather, Joseph Spencer, and I've been liaising with the Hebden Bridge Local History Society. Joseph ran a successful business in the late 19th century as a tailor in Hebden Bridge with branches in Burnley, Accrington and Oldham, and a base in Manchester as well. He opened his branch in Burnley (1 Yorkshire Street) in the 1880s. The manager, I believe, was his brother-in-law Virgil Greenwood, who I know lived in Briercliffe with his family, and latterly had his own business there. Virgil was the eldest son of Joseph Greenwood, co-founder and long-time manager of the Hebden Bridge Fustian Cooperative. If anyone has information regarding Joseph Spencer's business in Burnley, or could advise me where I could find it, I would be grateful. Also, any information anyone has on Virgil himself, including the years he worked with Joseph, and his business after that in Briercliffe. Many thanks, Chris (Christopher) Collier
