Irene (the lady who makes the brew at the meetings) lent me some pictures to scan last night and one of them is 'at the ILP' at Roggerham. It looks like a picnic area or something but I'm not 100% sure. Gloria, Irene and Roger all said 'it's the ILP' but I forgot what it stood for....independent something or other?????

Independent Labour Party.

They had 'country' gatherings in various places, including near Newchurch, and I think one somewhere in Marsden, I can't recall just now. Can dig out more information.

See page 188 in Roger's Lancashire Township Mel. " Cloughcroft,for example,was used as a place of retreat for the I.L.P and many well known socialist politicians visited the building after it was purchased in 1926."

Also on page 22 " Cloughcroft, an abandoned building in Extwistle which some will remember as the I.L.P. cottage bought by the party in 1926.It stands close to Ing Hey."

The Nelson ILP 'Clarion House' was (is ?) near Walton's monument.

Clarion clubs were ILP social clubs, often based around cycling, which was held to be a suitable way of exercising if you were a fairly radical socialist (like table tennis for communists ?!)

See Jeffrey Hill's excellent study of Nelson ['Nelson : Politics, Economy, Community'], 1997. Nelson was a hotbed of this brand of socialism.

Also for the Newchurch Clarion House, see 'Clarion House', by Iveson and Brown, 1987. Much about the ILP generally.
