Post subject:  Storys from Haggate School

From about 1940 I was a pubil at Haggate School. I remember Miss Hutton who Taught the first grade. This lady was oldish when I attended, but everyone in Harle Syke seemed to have had her as their teacher. I have great and good memouries of this lady. I was left Handed and to this day I remember her statement to me " You may be left handed but you will not write like a cripple". As a result I do write "normal", but I smile often as I see Lefties who do write like cripples. I wonder where my old pals from Haggate are at this time and date?

Post subject:  Brierleys from Briercliffe

Alec
There was a Brierley family living at 11 Granville St Brierclffe in 1901.
(census ref RG13; Piece: 3868; Folio: 56; Page: 23).
They were:

John Brierley age 36 head
Ellen Brierley age 34, wife
Hilda Brierley age 11 daughter
Elizabeth A Brierley age9 daughter
John W Brierley age 7 son
Maggie Brierley age 5 daughter
Albert Brierley age 2
all of them were born in Briercliffe

Do you think this might be your father's family?
If so, perhaps someone out there may recognise it as being their family too.

If his father John William was born in 1890 Portia the John W on the 1901 census would have been 11 years old not 7 years.

Thanks David, I had in fact spotted that. However it was the only briercliffe Brierley family I could find that approximated. And the censuses weren't always spot on. I thought it was worth an ask...

And after all, I am only an apprentice!

It is the right family.
Alec has been in touch with me through PM, John William Brierley had brothers Albert and Tom, and sister Elizabeth Annie.

Yes I agree Portia............................................... that sometimes the enumerators get it wrong, not that you are only an apprentice.
It does look a good possibility.

One thing though, and Alec will correct me if I am wrong, but I understood John's wife was called Margret (Alec's spelling).

Same family 1891 census, he is down as Jonas
Name Age
Ellen Brierley 24
Hilda Brierley 1
Jonas Brierley 25
living in Townley St.
There was a Jonas Brierley born 1787, and apart from this I have not come across the name again in the Brierleys, in my direct line down.

Do you mean John (the father's) wife was called Margret and not Ellen as per the census Gloria.?

Post subject:

Yes David.
I have found a possible marriage in 1887 Dec qtr Burnley vol 8e, page 438
***John Brierley
Henry Crowther
Johanna Lanty
***Ellen Nuttall

There is also a marriage in 1891 June qtr Burnley vol 8e, page 375.
***John Brierley
Edward Frankland
***Margaret Judge
Sara Roberts
But this marriage was after the 1891 census where they were down as married with a daughter.
We need Alec to speak to us.

Alec, if you send for the wedding cert it will give you the names of John Brierley and Ellen's fathers, then you can track back with the census. You can do it online with the details you have above, don't know how much it would be to send it overseas but it can't be a fortune.
