FIREFIGHTERS battled blazes in a derelict Burnley mill after senseless yobs set off half-a-dozen fires last night.
Parts of Casterton Avenue and a section of Briercliffe Road were closed off for two hours on Wednesday from 7-30 p.m. as fire crews from Burnley and Hyndburn battled flames which threatened to rip through the old Dorma building, dubbed a "death trap" by firefighters.

Fires had been lit in the loading bay area and throughout the mill, which meant firefighters had to race through the dangerous old building to stop the spread of the blazes.

A bonfire-type fire had also been lit outside the mill, which is a popular target for firebugs.

It was last seriously hit in June this year when the roads also had to be closed off as the flames were brought under control.

Watch manager Pete Ashworth of Burnley Fire Station said: "Most of Casterton Avenue and Briercliffe Road down to Burnley General Hospital had to be blocked off because of the thick smoke, as plastics had started to burn in the fires.

"We have had real problems with a group of kids in this area and starting fires like this is extremely stupid and it puts not only the youngsters in danger but also fire crews, as we have to work our way around a very unsound building to find and put out the fires. Someone could get very badly hurt.

"The Dorma building is basically a death trap now, it is that unsafe, so to go in there and light fires is incredibly dangerous."
Police are investigating the blaze. Any witnesses or people with information should call Burnley police on 425001 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Dorma, which made bedlinen products but was put up for sale in 2000 and became Red Rose Stitching but closed down for good in 2005.

It has since become a target for vandals and firebugs but the building is set to be demolished to make way for a new 108-home development.
