Tributes to gym death councillor

FAMILY and colleagues have paid tribute to a Briercliffe parish councillor who died suddenly at the gym.
Mr Michael Holsgrove (59), of Hillingdon Road, collapsed while using an exercise machine in the fitness suite at the St Peter's Leisure Centre last week.

A familiar face, Mr Holsgrove sat on Briercliffe Parish Council for the last two years and had been involved in the Scouting movement for many years.

He moved to Harle Syke with his wife Rita on their marriage in 1975 and the couple had two children Rachel and Andrew, as well as grandsons Jake and Toby.

Andrew said: "He was very community-spirited and really enjoyed his time on the parish council. My dad worked as an engineer at Aircelle, and had been there since being an apprentice when it was Lucas. He also worked briefly at British Aerospace.

"He was assistant District Commissioner for the Burnley district of the Beaver Scouts in the 1990s and was associated with St James' Church in Lanehead."

A post-mortem examination revealed Mr Holsgrove died of a heart attack. His brother Jack died in similarly tragic circumstances two years ago when he died of a heart attack on Barden bowling green.

Coun. Anne Kelly paid tribute saying: "Michael was a particularly good parish councillor and a very practical man. He was a doer, not a talker, and was very hardworking. He will be sorely missed."

Fellow Briercliffe parish councillor Roger Frost described him as "enthusiastic and capable". He added: "This is very sad and my thoughts are with his family."

Mr Holsgrove's funeral took place yesterday with a service at St James's Church and cremation at Burnley Crematorium.
