Can be useful as an alternative to birth registers. According to the magazine this info is from (dated May 2000), direct access is allowed but their survival varies for each county. they should be found amongst the Poor Law Union records in the local county archives/record office. There may be a closure period in force for some as most medical records are closed to the public for 100 years. The details given in these records are the same as a birth certificate except mothers maiden name is not given nor is the name of the person registering the birth.
