I turned the tv on last night halfway through a news report about the 1841 census. It was the BBC north west news, and a guy from Ancestry UK was showing a way to read damaged censuses by shining different types of light from different angles. Did anyone else see this? I know some of the 1841 from the Manchester/Stockport area were water damaged----I so do hope it is those. |

Ha ha I missed enough to get the date wrong, it is the 1851. Interesting clip though. |

I didn't realise the 1851 was that bad. I thought it was just the 1841. |

I'm delighted. The areas affected are those where my family lived, so quite a few of them disappear after 1841. I.ve seen images of some of the water-dmaged ones, but never realised there were some as bad as that photo. |

The 1851 damaged ones from Manchester area were the subject of a major effort using modern technology by the Manchester and Lancashire FHS a few years back. They published them on fiche : I found some of my ancestors I never expected to see again ! Their website should have details. I have the portion for Prestwich (including Gt and Lt Heaton where my family lived)and Blackley, and can do look-uips, just ask. Rex |
