We therefore take this opportunity of declaring our utter inability to comply with so unreasonable and unwarrantable a demand, for which there does not appear the smallest pretence or plea of necessity, but would on the contrary, if complied with, be productive of the greatest injury to them and us.

'2dly. Being, however, fully persuaded that this injudicious and improvident transaction is in reality disapproved of by the sober, industrious, and most discerning of the workmen, we avail ourselves of this occasion to request those who have not left their employment, to continue at their work; and also those who have been incautiously and inconsiderately misled, to return to their respective employments, confidently relying on our support and protection.' Many of the electors lived outside the area, or even outside the county. The names are listed roughly alphabetically by surname, with christian name, residence and occupation: with a key to the nature of their property (freehold fr, rented rt, or copyhold ch), and for whom the votes were cast (CR.: Rt. Hon. R. A. Christopher, who received 5,585 votes; CH.: Sir Montague J. Cholmeley, 4,777; S.: James Banks Stanhope, 5,575). Each elector had two votes. The franchise comprised all adult m

Have you ever ordered anything via the original record Gloria? Or know anyone who has? I'd be a bit concerned about paying for a record and then discovering it was a treanscription error. There's no telling that it's the right name from the index is there...or am I doing something wrong?

No I haven't Mel. I would think if you order one and it isn't as described then it can go back. I don't find it an easy site as it doesn't tell you much, other than the name you are looking for is there. Am I right in that you can only search surnames on their own and not with first names?

It is surname only. It seems to me to be an index of the contents of many other sites (which could be a very useful tool if done properly)...like the National Archives...so more info should/could be available at the main source. That's assuming you can figure out what the source is!
