I'd agree with all of those. I think some are more common since the boost to the obsession from TV programmes like WDYTYA.

I may have been guilty of a couple (1 & 10) but in the early days of my research, not so much now.

Thanks Gloria

Same here Mel, also number 8, I had an "ancestor" for a couple of years, who I took back for decades, only to find out he wasn't mine at all, not even the right name.

I once married a woman off to the wrong man. The woman was a sibling of my ancestor and I didn't develop the line further other than census returns. No harm done in this instance but made me more careful, particularly with common names!

Happened to me early days, but won't happen again! A combination of taking someone else's tree as gospel and them assuming we were related to someone famous. When I finally decided to verify it, amy years later, I discovered that my dad's cousin's tree was good for several generations but then created a link to the famous person by 'inventing' a brother for him. Trouble is that tree is all round the family and no-one will accept it's wrong because 'he went to Ireland and really went into ito all'. Ah well.

Not that famous - unless you're an Irish Catholic! Archpishop John McHale. Every McHale in the world seems to be trying to attach themselves to his tree :P
