I have an Anne (Or possibly Hannah) Foulds who married George Sutcliffe 28 July 1800 at St Bartholomew in Colne. Can anyone account for either George or Anne?
I think George might be the brother of my 4x great grandfather, I'm trying to confirm this.

My Thomas Foulds was the father of Dan Foulds born 22nd July 1792.
Dan married Nancy Nutter on 26th Feb 1816.
Dan's mother was Betty ????
Does anyone have any more info on Thomas and Betty.
Thomas was my 5Xgt grandfather.

I have found possible parents for Dan Foulds in Thomas Folds and Betty Hudson married in St. Barts Colne on 14.1.1783. Thomas was born at Cloughhead in Marsden and baptised at Haggate 4.6.1746. Dan's second marriage was to Nancy Nutter. She was baptised at Haggate on 23.3.1793. Her parent is Malley Nutter. Is this a man or woman. Help!

on the register for Haggate it says Nancy Nutter's mother ---Malley. I have never found out any more about her, or Nancy's father.
I have eight children born to Dan and Nancy. I didn't know she was his second wife, who was the first?

Gill, where did you get the baptism of Thomas Foulds 4-6-1746 Haggate, as they didn't start doing baptisms there until 1768?
There is one on IGI 4th Jan 1746 St Bartholomews, Colne. He is down as the son of Richard.

I received this from Gill.

Dan Folds married first Margaret Halstead in November 1812. I believe they had a son John baptised Haggate 6.8.1813. Margaret died and was buried Haggate 5.4.1815. . I don't know what happened to John. Maybe he died too. Dan then went on to marry Nancy in 1816. Sorry my mistake, the baptism I quoted for Thomas was the one you found at St Barts Colne, not Haggate.
The trouble is that I am doing so many branches of the family at once that I get confused.

THOMAS FOULDS

This name has been latent for some time, but hopefully the following will be of interest.

Thomas Foulds was one of the large family of Dan and Nancy, and born in 1819. The family was on Cop Row in the 1840s, and like many others was living in very difficult circumstances at the time of the Quaker survey in early 1843. (See my references to this elsewhere) Thomas is identifiable, earning just 1/6 a week.

However ! There are newspaper articles of this period which mention him (British Newspaper Archive). From 1841 to 1847 he is found as a 'pedestrian', taking part in races over a variety of distances, running or walking, in various places. These were usually against one other, and were for wagers.

Quite how much money Thomas himself might make is not clear, but the amounts involved could be considerable, indeed on a scale that would be astronomical compared with the tight finances of Cop Row residents.

Thomas was known as the 'Cop Row Lad' : most participants had nicknames.

Thomas Foulds born 1819 is the sister of Martha Foulds my 3x GT grandmother. An interesting man racing for money, a bit like gambling. My father and grandfather had betting shops around the east Lancashire area quite a few years ago, in fact I used to manage one.......many years ago.
