I've just come across this site, which seems to be a very useful source of information on BMD Certificates. It answers a lot of questions about certificates that I hadn't thought of asking, as well as some I had. I hope others find it interesting.

A useful site Charon, especially for someone who may be just starting out.

Something I read on another forum that is along similar lines to this - there are sites out there that will charge you the earth to get a certificate for you. There is no need to use such sites even if you are overseas. As long as you have the relevant informatiom (index references preferred) you can buy direct from the GRO via their own site http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ at a cost of £7 per certificate (the price quoted is as published on the GRO website today). There may be an additional cost such as postage if you are buying from overseas.
They also have the option to phone or write to place an order.

I'm sure you didn't mean to suggest that the site I mentioned was one of those that offer to obtain certificates at an exorbitant fee - in fact it states quite specifically that it cannot, and gives some helpful information on how to get certificates for oneself.

Perhaps I need to enter the "usual disclaimer" that I have no connection with the site other than a grateful reader!

No I didn't Charon. Sorry

I found the link you provided to be really informative as I said. I have often been asked by friends who decide to dabble in family tree what information would be given on the various certificates. Your link provides all this info and more.

I just thought my observation was of the same theme....certificates.

Hi Mel,

I've found the GRO site to be a fantastic service when ordering certificates from overseas via email. I ordered three certificates on Christmas Day, (yes, Christmas Day, do we ever stop with this), and they arrived by air mail on January 6. The charge is still 7 pounds each, no extra postage. Whenever I order, the certificates arrive within ten days to two weeks.
