I never saw one of these US censuses before. Some interesting questions on there.

blank US Census forms from 1790 to 1930 can be viewed or downloaded at http://www.ancestry.co.uk/charts/census.aspx Lots of questions right from the start, in fact I've often wished the UK Census asked as many (but not about me, of course!) There's a link to some Canadian forms there as well.

Thanks Charon. I didn't know about the sample forms.
I agree about some of the questions. More relevant than some of the questions on ours.

Bit of a puzzler this -
We have John Leaver 1794 - 1871, fully accounted for as to birth, death, wives & censuses. Now I've found this one:
1871
RG10; Piece: 4152; Folio: 89; Page: 15
Mereclough Cliviger
John LEver, 78, head, marr, annuitant, b Briercliffe
Esther Lever, 65, wife, marr, b Hapton.

1861
Class: RG9; Piece: 3074; Folio: 54; Page: 11
Mereclough Cliviger
John Leaver 60, head, marr, calico weaver, b Cliviger
Easther Leaver,59, wife, marr, b Cliviger

I've tried every which way but can't find them on any other census.

This is probably her death:
1882 Burnley 3rd qr. Vol 8e p148. Esther Leaver aged 76
and maybe (?) his:
1881 Burnley 2nd qr. Vol 8e p136. John Leaver aged 82

I searched the marriage indexes from 9/1837 to 1871 and the only marriage I could find of a John Lever/ Leaver and an Esther was:
Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1846
LEAVER, John & BORROWCROFT Esther at Burnley, Holy Trinity. Records at Preston CE104/1/358.
Obviously in view of their ages, John & Esther may have been married before 1837. Bur even if they were I can't account for the couple in the marriage.
The marriage does appear on Ancestry ‘England & Wales marriages 1538 – 1940’ but my subscription would need upgrading for that.

Stuck now as Ancestry just died on me.

Maybe this family has something to do with that grave Marion mentioned?

Always possible I suppose.
What intrigues me is that when I first found them it was 1871, where he shows his birth place as Briercliffe. The next one shows Cliviger but I'm dubious of that as it shows Cliviger for her too and she'd previosly put Hapton. I think it's possible the enumerator in 1861 made assumptions that they'd always been in Cliviger.
IWhen I can get ancestry back I'm going to check out Cliviger 1851 a page at a time to see whether I can find them. See whether there are any more clues. Then when I next go to Preston I'll look up the marriage cert for his father's name - assuming it's the same couple.

Transcribed as "Lewer" (that's a new one I think)
1851
HO107; Piece: 2251; Folio: 30; Page: 13
Mereclough Cliviger
John Leaver, 51, head, marr, weaver, b Briercliffe
Esther Leaver, 50, wife, marr, b Higher Booths

We do have some of the very early Leavers at Cliviger so I'm hoping this one will be useful. Just wish I could get my hands on the marriage cert this minute!

Yes, Lewer is a new one! The transcriber was probably German…..

I wonder who John’s father was. Does the name tie into that Cliviger research you found at Preston?

Have to check when I get home. Unfortunately the Preston stuff was in the notepad that was on the coffee table when the glass of wine fell over. I'm still trying to decipher half of it!

If (hopefully) the marriage above is the right one it could be really useful. The father's name would relate to someone born to a generation we know little about.

Kris, we already have 1871 - that was the first one I found.

Shelled out for the Ancestry details of the Leaver/ Borrowcroft marriage but it's a disappointment - all it told me that I didn't already know was the groom's father's name. William Leaver. It's a start but I still want to see the full record to see what else I can glean.

We don't seem to have an obvious William to fit the bill.
