I'm sure this isn't the right place to put this, but couldn't find another-----you can move it Mel if it's wrong.

In the recent photos---
Briercliffe Groups---my gt grandad is on the Briercliffe Brass Band pic. http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/ima ... e_3611.jpg
Sports Teams--In Loving Memory---I think my grandad (Th'Owd Syker) wrote that, it's just his style and humour. http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/ima ... e_3624.jpg

Optical Character Recognition. Scans and reads text documents and could save the hassle of transcription. Playing with it now but it doesn't seem to see the newspaper articles.
It will work for the newsletters though

Mel,

my OCR software (it's called OmniPage SE and came as a freebie with a scanner) generally works well but on poor quality text it's worth scanning at a high resolution (say 300 dpi or more). This seems to make it easier for the software to recognise the characters.

Thanks Charon.
The software I have is great, it too was a freebie....the problem is, the news articles came from the internet and were screen grabs and not necessarily high res. They are not all that easy to find a second time either. I searched for one yesterday and it took me ages by the time I had corrected the errors that occur - it would have been quicker to transcribe it!

I think I will search out the larger articles, like the recollections, and use the software for them.

Mel,

I should have realised that you weren't likely to have your own copies of all the original documents! I've used my OCR program mainly to transcribe pages from newspapers, magazines and books, and I quite agree that if the OCR doen't produce a clean copy, you can spend ages editing and correcting the errors. On the other hand you do end up with a .doc or an .rtf, sometmes more convenient than a .tif or .jpg

Anyway OCR is handy shot to have in our locker!

It certainly is!
I spent yesterday scanning the Society newsletters that I have. Lyndon will be fiddling with the site later so that they will be available to all. I need to ask Roger for some back issues as I only have about 8.
Hoping to speak to him later today and maybe see him soon?

Bowling team: Do you recognise anyone?

Dr. Muir is standing in the back row, far right
http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/Pho ... 20Muir.htm and http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/Pho ... ouncil.htm

The man in the front row, second from left with the flat cap, I think this is Abraham Leaver. The same man, back row, also second form left, can be seen in the Parish council photo. http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/Pho ... Leaver.htm

I reckon some of the boys from the 1910 photo are the same as the 1922 photo. What do you think? Do you recognise anyone?

I'm afraid I don't see it Kris.
I do see a similarity with one of the WWI soldiers though. It can't be the same person as the soldier died in service but take a look at James Leaver and then look at the chap who is 2nd from right on the middle row.
