My husband's family the HALSTEADS lived in WINDLE HOUSE, Briercliffe. Does anyone have information about this building?

I expect you have seen the photo gallery of Halsteads....I, too, am a Halstead, but there were lots of us generations ago, it seems! I have had no time to do much research as yet.....just as far back as my gg grandfather who was Robert Halstead....possibly the son at Windle House. If you get that far in YOUR research, he and his family owned the shop at Haggate (photo in gallery) and one of their sons was John Robert, my ggrandfather. One of his sons was James (also Edwin and Elizabeth Ellen)...and HIS son was Jack, my father - still plugging along at age 92. YOUR Halsteads may have divided off prior to my line...but wouldn't it be loverly??

Welcome to the forum Janice.

From Rogers book - The name means Wind Hill. The house can be traced to the 12th century and, in 1258, was in the hands of Adam and Henry of Windle.

There was a William Halsead at Windle who died in 1721. His will is mentioned a couple of times. Maybe looking this up will lead you to some new information? I suspect it might be held at the Lancashire Record Office.

Thanks so much for the welcome to the forum, and for your replies. I am new to all this, never having joined a forum before. I only came across the Briercliffe Society site by accident, and its great. Well we took ourselves off to Burnley library today, so i have spent hours looking at reams of Halstead material. Gloria, i did see Roger Frost's book a long long time ago, and would love a copy but i believe its very hard to get hold of now. Mel, I looked at and copied the Halstead wills, so i need to sit down and try and work out who is who.
Sue, I am sure there must be a connection between the two families who lived at Windle House, lets hope i can find what it was.

It was next in line after the Harle Syke book that has just been released but I'm not sure how long the process takes.
He is not having very many done and I know he has quite a list of people requiring a copy.

I will send you a PM with Rogers details Janice, you could give him a call and ask him to add you to the list if you are interested.

Failing that it is 2nd hand book shops and ebay but copies don't come up very often.

My late grandfather, William Henry Halstead owned Windle House, Briercliffe, having inherited it from his father William Halstead. He sold the property in probably the late 1930s or early 1940s and used the proceeds to build a bungalow in a village in West Yorkshire. He called the bungalow 'Windle House'.
