I have very happy memories of visiting the Duke Bar area frequently as a child. Both my parents grew up there. My dad lived on Abel St. We visited my grannie on Granville St., and relatives on Grey St., Cardinal St., and Holbeck St.

Maybe I should stick with the memories, and not return there for a visit in the future.

You wouldn't recognise the place now Joan, a lot of it is demolished and the rest should be, it has been brought down to it's knees I'm afraid, your better sticking to your happy memories. I have to look at it as I pass through on the way to Briercliffe to my Son's and to my dad's.

I used to manage the bookies at Duke Bar, think it's now under William Hills, but not sure.

No sorry not me. Used to go to North St swimming baths though. I remember a large woman with a long pole and she kept pushing me away from the side. It was freezing in there.

Eh! I remember North Street baths, used to go regularly, remember the woman and the pole, the diving board and the changing cubicles down both sides with little curtains at the top and a bench inside for you to sit on, they also had carbolic soap and do you remember the hairdryer Gloria. On the way home we always got a sticky bun with icing on from a shop near the baths, always starving and wrinkly when we came out.
