Charge of Embezzlement

William Gorbutt, cashier and bookkeeper to Messrs. Eckroyd, of Lomershaye, worsted spinners and manufacturers, Marsden, was brought before Mr. James Foulds, on Tuesday last, at Colne, charged with embezzling certain sums of money, the property of his employers. Several defalcations were specified, but the one on which he committed took place on the 20th ultimo, and amounted to £20. The prisoner, it was alleged, had made false entries in the ledger, and defalcations to the amount of £150 have already been found against him. Mr. Eckroyd, jun., and other persons, gave evidence, and the prisoner was committed to Preston, to take his trial at the ensuing sessions. Bail was refused. It appears, from his own statement, that he had a salary of about £250 per annum, his wife a private income of £80 a year, and that he came from Manchester (where he had been living) to Messrs. Eckroyd's in July last. He is about 25 years of age. His defalcations are attributed to gambling. The case excites considerable interest, in consequence of the prisoner having given freely to poor people, and to charities. He gave, it is said, £10 towards the late peace demonstrations at Marsden. Five £5 notes, £7 10s. in gold, and a gold watch and chain, valued at from £30 to £40, were found upon him when apprehended.
