Burnley's oldest grave is rediscovered

Isobel Woodrofe who died in 1676 at the remarkable age of 94 lived through such cataclysmic events as the Spanish Armada, Gunpowder Plot and the English Civil War, which claimed the life of one of her prominent relatives.

I'm very impressed at the sheer amount of historical changes she lived through!

I have an ancestor who died aged 96 back in 1848. She lived through the reigns of a staggering 23 Prime Ministers!

Would this be classed as Burnley's oldest known grave?

Do we have any hope of finding anyone who died before 1676?

Colne I think has at least one 16th century stone. or maybe early 17th, I'm not sure offhand.

My 8 gt-grandfather John WATSON, died 1682, is buried there, his stone is a large flat one, currently half covered by an aggressive shrub !

Further to my earlier post...

Wiilkinson's 'History of the Parochial Church of Burnley' (1856) says that the oldest (then) show 'A.W.1664' and '2 January 1677', other parts being illegible. These were not found when the Lancs FHS copied the MI a few years ago.

For Colne, the FHS copies give the oldest as 'E.F. 1597' (prior to the commencement of the registers !). Then there is 'I.H 1604', '1606' (no other detail), 'I.R. 1614', 'T.E. 1619', after which we come to the first fully named one '1626 John EMOT'. The letter 'I' may be what we would write as 'J', likely for John. There are a few more in the 17th century.

400 years is a long time ! Pay tribute to millstone grit !
