Death of a Famous Character
The death has just occurred of John Finch, who for many years held office as "Lord Mayor of Worsthorne." Throughout north and east Lancashire the mock corporation of the ancient borough of Worsthorne is famous, the borough being a tiny hamlet at the foot of Pendle-hill, and the lord mayor a retired platelayer famous for his native wit. Many visitors from neighbouring towns attended the somewhat frequent corporation banquets to do the Lord Mayor homage, and the most cherished possessions of the corporation were framed letters from the Queen's secretary, acknowledging the dutiful and loyal addresses presented Her Majesty at her two Jubilees.
