Good Morning all, I have just registered as a new member. I used to live in the Nelson area many years ago and my daughters still live there. One of my daughters and her husband have just purchased Quarry House, across from the graveyard. On taking completion of the house this weekend we all went - as you do - to get to know the new home. We discovered, in the hallway, attached to the stairs, a plaque. It has written upon it "Briercliffe Society Award". That is all. I remembered from my years in Nelson that this society existed so thought I would contact you and see if any light could be shed on this award, indeed whether it was awarded to the house or to a previous owner. Can anyone enlighten me please ?.

Hi, welcome to the forum.

The plaque would more than likely have been awarded for the house. If it has been tastefully renovated, the Briercliffe Society like to recognise the fact but awarding the plaques. I'll have a word with Roger to see if he can shed any light on when it was awarded and exactly why.

It could well be in one of the older newsletters which I have here so I'll try and get chance to have a look through them until I get to speak to Roger.

Hi Mel, it was a new build, pretty sure about that. We owned the majority of the quarry and it was known locally as the "Bull Field". We left in 1985 and it wasn't there then.

Hi Mel - and Gloria too,

Thank you for your greetings. Yes I think the house is "about" 20 years old only but sits very comfortably in its surroundings. I have to say that I personally find it an attractive build. It would be lovely if it were awarded for the house. My daughter will be thrilled to know what it is all about !!!. Thank-you for your reply and I look forward to the next installment.

Have just spoken to Roger. The house was awarded the plaque following a Committee decision that it was a nice addition to the area.

Thank-you Mel its what we thought, apparently it was awarded to a Mr & Mrs Potts. They must have been the 1st owners.

Yes, Roger mentioned their name. I think he said they built it.
