Well a teacher used to say to us rather unkindly "Dont just stand there like cheese at fourpence" at the junior school I went to; St Matthews in Padiham up until 1966 when my family emigrated to Australia, I can only assume that "cheese at fourpence" was left on the shelf as no one wanted it; either it was too expensive or had been reduced as it was long past its best, anyone else have any ideas on it ??

It reminds me of another good old saying- I'm standing here like 'piffy on a rockbun' It translates to, might as well not be here or a complete waste of space.

A lovely word is crammed is it just a local word to us or does everybody know what it means.

Crammed means packed like sardines in a tin round here. Never heard it used to describe 'high spirits'

Crammed can mean tetchy, bit bad tempered, it can also mean packed like sardines as Mel says. I think of it as tetchy.
