Hi, i'm relatively new to this, i tried this time last year and got side tracked.

I have just registered with ancestry.co.uk for the full package and i have got as far as John Thomas Redman and got stuck.

Does anybody know anything about him.

I think he died in 1897.

He would be my Grandma's Grandad.

I beleive he married Mary Binns. they had a daughter - Gertrude ( i think Grandma has her marriage certificate to Stephen Lamb, where it states her father as John Thomas Redman)

Gertrude is my Grandma's (Shirley Slinger) mother.

If anybody can help with anything i would be very grateful.

Jonathon

Hi Jonathon, welcome to the site.

I assume you have the census returns for J T Redman.

When was he born? Just what would you like to find out?

You say you think Grandma has her marriage certificate to Stephen Lamb, where it states her father as John Thomas Redman. It's probably worth checking the certificate to confirm this information. It's frustrating to bark up the wrong tree at any point in your research but to do it in the early stages would be even worse.

Hi,

I don't have the marriage certificate. it's a "Certified Copy of an Entry of Birth" (Issued for the purpose the factory and Workshop Act, 1901)

It confirms that Gertrude Redman was born 20/05/1897, her father was John Thomas Redman and mother Mary Redman (formely Binns)

I have scanned the document now so can e-mail copies if wanted.

Hi Jonathon. I have received your email, thanks.
I'll add the details from the certificate a little later....it does now confirm the details in your earlier post as correct. It is so easy to follow the wrong line...done it myself :?

I'll also have a look at the census.

My Grandma knows that he died when Gertrude was very young.

We have found a John Thomas Redman in the Death Register for Q4 1897.

Sue Regan has sent me some info and a card when he died with the date 24/11/1897.

i will e-mail this to you if you like. unless it is somewhere on the website already.

According to the date of death (and death reference), John Thomas was born about 1862. This could be him as a lodger in 1891

1891 RG12/3365 folio 64 pg 14
2 Rawlinson Street, Habergham Eaves
George Wm Wadsworth Head M 33 Grocer & Confectioner b.Hebden Bridge
Elizabeth Wife M 35 b.Huddersfield
John Redman Lodger S 28 Cotton weaver b.Burnley
John Dawson Lodger M 48 Warp dresser b.Keighley
James Laycock Lodger M 50 Labourer b.Brierfield

This could be the birth reference for him. I can't see any other possibilities but the two indexes I viewed (Freebmd & LancashireBMD) are incomplete so it's possible that another could turn up at a later date
Births Sep 1861
REDMAN John Thomas Burnley 8e 179
