I'm sure we all know the term, stop marlicking about ! But where did it originate?

Was there a clown called Marlick? or a Vaudeville act that it was named after? I would love to know.

I can't stop using this phrase to my children, and people look at me very strangely (ha ha) not only the Kiwi's here where we live in NZ, but also english people here have never heard of it !

Could 'marlicking' be a corruption of 'malarkey'? The two would seem to have similar meanings...
