We Can't Save Boy Stuck In Branches...Because Of Health & Safetree.
'Teachers call police on mum who rescued lad, 5'
A woman who rescued a boy of five stuck in a tree at school was reported to police. Passer-by Kim Barrett, 38, saw the lad in the 20ft-high branches with no sign of a responsible adult.
Staff had left the boy and retreated inside the building - to abide by health and safety rules. And when Kim helped him to safety, she was treated like an intruder. She said yesterday: "I stopped to ask the boy if he was OK. It became clear he had been there since the end of playtime, around half an hour earlier. I was immediately concerned."
She entered the grounds, helped the boy down from about 6ft up and took him into the school. Kim, who has a daughter aged six at a different school, recalled: "I told the associate head I thought it was a serious incident and he said his only concern was me trespassing."
That night, a letter from the head was posted through Kim's door to say the school had contacted the police. A Community Support Officer visited her the next day to explain she had been trespassing. Kim said: "I felt really angry. I saved the school and this boy from what could have been far worse.
"Instead of thanking me, I was under investigation. Ridiculous." Head Beverley Martin confirmed the policy at the 213- pupil Manor Church of England primary in Melksham, Wilts, forbids staff from helping children stuck up trees. Instead they should observe from a distance so the child does not get distracted and fall."
The head added: "This child was being observed at all times during this very short incident."
