I came across this oddment whilst looking for something else:
1880 US Census, Fall River, Bristol, Massachusetts

Steven SHOESMITH, Self, Marr Male White 30 birthplace ENG, Works In Cotton Mill mother & father b England
Hannah SHOESMITH, Wife, Marr Fem White 26 birthplace ENG, Keeping House, mother & father b England.
George T. SHOESMITH, Son, Single, Male, White, 4, birthplace ENG, mother & father b England.
Harriet A. SHOESMITH, Dau, Single, Female, White, 7Mths, birthplace Massachussets. mother & father b England.

Which appears to be this family:
1871 Census - RG10; Piece: 4148; Folio: 78; Page: 40
Byerden Mill, Burnley
Sarah Shoesmith, Head, Widow, 61yrs, House Maid, b. Briercliffe
Margaret Leaver, Daughter, Mar, 27yrs, Cotton Weaver, b. Briercliffe
Stephen Shoesmith, Son, Unm, 20yrs, Cotton Weaver, b. Burnley
Benjamin Shoesmith, Son, Unm, 15yrs, Cotton Weaver, b. Burnley

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1874
SHOESMITH Stephen & WHITTAKER Hannah at Colne, St Bartholomew. Registers at Preston CE118/8/233

Stephen's sister Margaret married Abraham in 1863. Another sister, Alice, married John Leaver 12 Sep 1872.

A contact of mine in Fall River (through my Turners) told me he went to school with a girl called Shoesmith - probably a descendant of this family.

Just checking my tree = his brother Thomas b. 1841 Briercliffe, went too sometime after 1881 and died there in 1918 (I think half the population of Burnley emigrated to Fall River!!)

the reason I was looking at this was that Margaret Shoesmith - who married Abraham Leaver - disappears after 1871 and I was trying to find her family for clues.
Abraham disappears from view after their marriage in 1863. I wondered whether he went abroad before 1871 and she followed after then. He reappears in 1901 with a new wife but I can't find marriage record for them. So maybe Margaret died abroad (or he just left her there) and he came back. It's all highly speculative.

MOH: Found Etta Shoesmith in Mass. Death Index:

Died 5-March 1970
Dighton MASS

Dighton is located in Bristol County, same county as Fall River. Bristol County borders the State of Rhode Island.

Anything specific you want to know from Ancestry Moh?
There are one or two of us on here who would happily take a look.

Thanks Mel - I do not have time just now to check on what I was looking at - will get back to you later.
Regarding an earlier reply stating the Alice Shoesmith who married John Leaver was Margaret's sister - I cannot find her on the 1861 census with the family - the only one seems to be the daughter of James & Phoebe Shoesmith born in Briercliffe.

Moh, I got a half priced sub to Ancestry not long ago, they may still be doing it. If not--ask away for anything.

I let my membership lapse for a month or so then got it. I didn't think I was using it very much until I didn't have it.
