This book was reprinted a few years ago by Landy publishing with additional illustrations. The original was published in 1877. You may be able to get a copy direct from Bob Dobson (Landy publishing owner), he is a forum member. I can't remember if he is registered as Landy or Bob but he will be in the members list.

There are several copies available on Amazon for around £5. I've also seen copies on Alibris, Abebooks and Northern Life. Northern Life prices the book at £5 and then there will be p£p but I don't know how much this is. Abe and Alibris were a little more expensive.

Thanks Mel, I have ordered mine, £5.00 + 1.75 p.p, it should be a 'good read' if I found a mention of any relatives I would be stunned, but I need to know what life was like around Pendle in those days. Watch this space

I had a quick flick through, I don't think the entire book will be of interest to me personally but there were bits that jumped out

A book written through the eyes of a poet. He describes things he has seen on his walks around the 'Pen' that we no longer see from a car
Newchurch in Pen-dale, 'Old inns, ten times older than teetotalism, shops differing in importance where you can expect to purchase anything from a side of bacon to coffee, tea, tobacco, train oil , treacle and nails'.
I will have to take a closer look next time I go, I thought what is there is what there had always been there.

' Between Pendle Hill and Downham is a minor eminence called Diamond Hill and another between Twiston and Downham called Ideson in which are found beautiful crystals known as Downham diamonds!!!!!!!

Later he stops off at the Crown in Colne for refreshment and meets a Pendle forester who was ' a little sprung with drink'
You don't get sprung nowadays!!! Can't remember the word and it probably wouldn't be allowed on this website.

I love his view of the area and his gift of transcribing what I for one seem to have been taking for granted.

Another random thought crossed my random brain The book was written mid 1800, would anyone know if there were any pictures ( ie drawings) of Newchurch covering that period?
