The Laki Craters in southern Iceland erupted in 1783 and shrouded Britain in a deadly cloud of a toxic mix of volcanic gasses.
Entire families of farm and outdoor workers were wiped out.
The complete article can be read in todays Daily Mail and makes very interesting reading. The headlines saying--Famine in Britain, Countries plunged into months of darkness, Thousands killed.
