Who remembers

Fever cure ... stomach upsets and everything else

Beechams powders ... fevers, colds etc

Beechams little liver pills ... Can't remember

Andrews liver salts ... Not sure but I liked this even though it used to take my breath away.

Malt ... My favourite

Scott's emulsion .. Coughs, colds, and general tonic

Cod liver oil ... we used to get this free

Condensed orange juice ... we used to get this free as well

Hot poker put in stout ... tonic

Themegene ? ... Pink stuff used to put on chests.

Goose grease and brown paper ... for chesty colds and a miracle cure.

Thermogene? It was applied regularly to my mothers slipped disk,lovely pink stuff that made you sneeze and had the double advantage of clearing headaches. When did it go out of production.?
Germolene, cured everything, the PINK STUFF that smelled medical! not the stuff we can get today. I spent a great deal of my childhood with a huge wad of dressing covered in germolene and stuck to my knee with elastoplast when I fell off my bike, it usually slid down to my ankle fairly fast, but you felt it worked. It even went with us for a spell of two years in Pakistan when my mum was apparently the main source of medical aid for many people. Veganin for headaches and pain,gripe water, tasted good, fever cure, made my teeth 'curl'.
Fennings Little Healers? no idea what they healed.

VICK!!! for my whooping cough, a sock full of hot salt applied around my sore tonsillitus which in turn leaked out onto my Vick covered chest
and was pretty messy.

The little white homeopathic pills my grandma made me take for what? No I have no idea.

Thermogene ... I remember it made the area were it was kinda hot.

I can still remember the smell of germolene.

Indian brandy ... Girly pain.

I loved fever cure but then I like lemons with salt on.

When I was given a penny or 2, I wouldn't spend it on sweet stuff. A baking apple was my favourite.

Can you remember Alum ... used I think for mouth ulcers. ? I even liked to lick that as well but I always got told off.

I can't remember the hot salt in a sock.

Cephos!!!! |I'm sure there was a general aches and pains tablet called Cephos . When did that go?


Knitbone! My Grandma grew it and came down with a huge bunch when I broke a bone in my foot. Brewed it up in the kitchen and made me sit with my foot in it, then she wrapped the leaves in a wadge of by now cold soggy messy things around my ankle which I had to keep on, somehow? to relieve the pain and swelling
Trouble is it worked.?

Now the liquid is used in my garden for fertilizer , clearly I'm going wrong

LOL ! Well it must have been good for something.

Dock leaves where used for wort's and stinging nettles where boiled up and used for something ? Not sure what though !

Coffee was used for leg tan. I used to watch my older sister mix in up in a saucer then put it on her legs.

I remember having a dolly blue bag dabbed on my bruises and swelling whenever i fell over and hurt myself as a child. Surely they where used for the washing.

I'm probably the only one who doesn't know this, but, )my dentist says that in the Victorian period it was normal for parents to present their offspring with their first set of false teeth!!!!! Not the key to the door, TEETH! So things have improved eh?

In 1950s Colne was I the last child to have kaolin poultices applied to my chest?

Also - who else remembers Liquafruita cough medicine? It tasted strongly of onions (and apparently garlic - not that I knew what that tasted like at the time!)

Condensed orange -always known to me as "Clinic orange" was used in our house to flavour cakes - and very good it was too.

Just remembered Golden Eye ointment, which terrifed me as a child after reading on the instructions that it was poisonous if eaten. I had a horror of rubbing my eyes in the night and then sucking my fingers while still asleep - never to wake up!

I've just checked the name out online - it's still around but the ointment no longer contains mercury!

Nurse Harvey's gripe water. My mum used to give it to my baby sister and had to hide it as I used to take great swigs out of the bottle. (didn't find out till many years later it contained alcohol)
