One runs form Manchester road the other is down by Resevoir Road off Spring Hill Road. I have never been to the area and am just relying on the map, so I cn quite easily take a correction if this is wrong!

I've looked at it on Multimap and they are split by the railway line. I went to a house on the Healey Wood Rd off Springhill Rd donkeys years ago, the directions we were given were to take the turning above the roundabout as you couldn't get to that part of Healey Wood Rd from the other--hope that makes sense. So it is in effect the same road.

Hi Stant, welcome to the site! What month was Martin born? The 1881 census was taken on the 3rd, April, and according to that census, your family was living at Healey Row. On the day of the 1881 census, Daniel Brooks the photographer was living at 14 Healey Wood road.

I had come to a complete standstill trying to locate them on the census!

My great grandfather was born in November 1881. It does clearly say 14 Healy Road on the birth cert, but I would imagine that Annie (who registered the birth) was probably unable to read, and so Road could easily be Row.

I am trying to locate the marriage certificate of Patrick and Annie, so I can trace Patrick back to Ireland. I cant seem to locate the marriage, any ideas?

Once I a sure of Patricks Father and Mother I can start searching in Ireland.

My great grandfather, Martin, died in the first world war and was a Burnley war hero. His obituary was in the local paper and I have a copy of it from Burnley library. The Obituary states that he was a "prominant member of the Irish League" and a member of the concert artists club. Any information on these two organisations would be very welcome. THe Irish League would have been Irish Nationalists I am assuming.

Our family has now come full circle back to Ireland, but we still have some relatives in Burnley whom I have traced.

Also, if Martin's birth certificate states the address as 14 Healey Wood Road, then I would presume that this is correct. Perhaps the Brooks family were friends of the Stanton's or maybe Martin's Mother was getting her photograph taken?

Thats amazingly fast research!

I had seen the Honor Molloy reference but wasnt sure it was Annie, however my hsband says Honor was often shortened to Annie.

I will order the marriage cert for more information.

I do knoe a bit about Martin. We are very proud of him, he fought in Gallipolli but caught dysentry on his way home and died in Gibralter where he is buried. The obituary describes that he had the last rights and died thinking of Ada. THe nurse in the hospital wrote Ada a letter but I doubt we will ever see this again.

We also have Duffys from Burnley who I am also going to research, Martis son, Thomas Stanton (my grandad) married Doreen Duffy daughter of Ellen and Joseph Duffy.

Regarding the birth certificate. I looked closely again and the number I assumed was a 4 may well be a 7. In old writing the top part of the 7 comes up higher and looks a bit like a 4.

My Gt. uncle, Thomas McCarthy (1892-1915) of 11 & 26 Leyland Road, Burnley also served in the East Lancs, and he was killed at Dardanelles (Gallipoli) six days before Martin. http://burnleyinthegreatwar.info/burnle ... s16967.htm

Thomas McCarthy arrived in the Balkans on 1st Aug 1915 and he was presumed dead on 9th August 1915. Martin Stanton arrived in the Balkans, 23rd, July 1915 and was killed 15th September 1915, so I would imagine they did serve together for a short time. They would have known each other at least. Both lived on the same street, both had Irish roots and I am certain they both attended St. Mary's Church (Thomas attended St. Mary's church and school).

Yes, they must have known each other living on the same street, and its very likely that they served together. It was a terrible engagement, the Dardenelles. My great grand father actually survived the battles only to die in Gibraltar. I understand only a handfull of men returned to Burnley.

I assume Martin would have gone to the Catholic school and Church nearby, St Marys. He took great comfort on his deathbed from a priest who visited him each day before he died (from his obituary).

I know that after his death my great grandmother, Ada, was very poor, she raised the six children on barely nothing. One of them died. My grandad always blamed Churchill for his policy of using the Dardenelles as a decoy for the landing of the other alied forces elsewhere, they really didnt stand a chance in the Dardenelles, they were so outnumbered.

Ada also lost her brother in the battles, John Deane, a week before her husband died. What a time.

My Grandad also blamed Churchill, but my Grandad was also a communist

I knew about Agnes and George but not John, he must have been a brother of Martin. Martin called his oldest son John.

Very sad that so many little babies died in infancy.

I just discovered your post, and I'm intrigued as Thomas McCarthy was my great, great uncle. You're on Vancouver Island, and I'm in Toronto...
