Wednesday February 13 1895

Obituary

Mr. John Sagar, of Coley Hall, Nelson, died suddenly from an apoplectic seizure on Monday night. Deceased, who was 58 years of age, carried on business as a cotton manufacturer at Trawden, and he was chairman of the Trawden District Council. He was also a member of the Nelson Town council, his death being the first amongst the members of that body since the incorporation of the borough four years ago, when he was first elected upon the council. He was a prominent Liberal and Wesleyan.

On Saturday last, at Southfield, near Colne, much respected by a large circle of friends, Richard Sagar, Esq. He bore a a long affliction with the most perfect submission to the Divine will, and supported by the truths of our holy religion, met death with the utmost composure.

OBITUARY
MR. W. SAGAR
A native of Briercliffe, Mr. Walter Sagar, 24, Gilbert-street, Burnley, died last Sunday in the Primrose Bank Institution after a long illness. Aged 61, he was well-known in the district in his younger days, attending St. James’s Church, playing both cricket and football for the Sunday school team. A weaver, he had worked throughout his life for the same firm, Thornton and Co., Harle Syke. In his younger days he was a cornet player in the Briercliffe Brass Band. He served with the East Lancashire Regiment for over three years during the last war and was twice wounded. He was a member of the G.U.O.O.F., Burnley. He leaves a widow, son and daughter. Mr. W. E. Thornber officiated at the internment in Haggate Burial Ground on Thursday. Arrangements by J. Atkinson, Harle Syke.

Wednesday April 28 1943

Briercliffe

The interment took place in Hill-lane Baptist Burial Ground on Monday of Mr. James Henry Sagar, of 42, Halifax-road, Briercliffe. Mr. Sagar died on Thursday last at the age of 76. A native of Worsthorne, he had been engaged in poultry farming all his life. He had lived in Briercliffe during the past ten years. His wife and five daughters survive him. The Rev. H. Hough offered prayers at the home and officiated at the graveside. Arrangements by Burnley Co-op.

A verdict of "Death from natural causes" was returned at an inquest on Saturday on James Henry Sagar (76), retired cotton weaver, High Sym, Briercliffe, who was found dead in Simpson-lane on Thursday evening. Alice Eastwood, Willow Dene, Halifax-road, Briercliffe, said that on Thursday afternoon Sagar called at her house and said he wanted some shopping doing. Witness went for these articles and Sagar then left the house. Ethel Goddard, Leaches-road, Colne, daughter, said that her father always enjoyed good health. the only time he had been medically attended was when he had his left eye removed 12 years ago. Harry Whittaker, Slack Farm, Briercliffe, spoke to finding Sagar lying on a grass bank, 200 yards along the lane.
