Like myself, I imagine that quite a few of the boards' ancestors dwelt at one time or another in Lane Bottom.

Now, the trouble for me has always been in ascertaining exactly whereabouts in the area my ancestors - the Kippaxes - lived. However, a thought occurs...

I've got access to a couple of 1800s maps of the area, one of which is so detailed that one can see (and count) the individual houses.

Now, could those maps be coupled with information from the earliest censuses and allow us to follow the footsteps of the enumerator as he (or she...actually, presumably 'he') traipses through Briercliffe, stopping at named farms on the way and then arrived at Lane Bottom (or, indeed, any other area in which you may be interested). By seeing which properties come first, we'd know whether the enumerator came from the East or the West, and then simply by counting the numbers of properties visited, we'd be able to find out which families lived where.

My only problem with this is that I don't have access to the censuses in a manner in which I can 'turn the page' and note down each family surname from each household. Would anyone be willing to do this? It could be a fascinating piece of research...

I think I can do it with the 1841 census Stephen. I will be back in the UK at the weekend - send me a message on Sunday to remind me please. I'm getting old and have an awful memory!

Stephen, I have had a quick look at 1841 Lane Bottom and the enumerator went from Sparrable Row-Hill Factory-Sandbec. John Kippax was the in the second house on from the right as you would look at the row.
It would be an interesting exercise to put names to houses.

Please find attached the nearest maps I could get to 1841. They're quite large scale (or is that small scale? I could never remember which is which) but anyway, they're not as detailed as I might have liked, being as old as they are. I have an 1893 map with much better detail. Nothing in between I've come across yet, sadly.

I'm afraid that my knowledge of most of the Briercliffe environs outside of the cross roads is very poor, so I'm not sure where the places you mention are Gloria. But see attached, anyway!

Thanks for those, Leaver. Will have a look at how they fit onto the map.

See below for a better idea of where those 1841 houses are. Two maps side by side so we can see which of those earlier houses made it through to the point at which the more detailed map was created!

They didn't have gardens at the back until a few years ago. I don't think there was even a back door. AND, the loo was across the road.

But I can see the plots of the gardens on the 1893 map - unless they're not gardens but something else...?

'Second-guessing' the way the enumerator travelled is certainly worth a go, but in some cases at least, I think he (or she, enumeratress ?) may have written things up in a somwhat random order. Particularly, I tried this approach for Cop Row in 1841/51 (when of course the houses did not have numbers). Also, people may well have moved (sorry, flitted) from one house to another. So we ned to proceed in this with caution !

Ah, I can see how the 'random order' thing might be the case. Of course I had forgotten that the original enumerations were done as notes, and then copied to the main transcript. Of course orders can become changed in such an act.

A first (brief) attempt at getting the heads of households down. This is from 1841 census. I've not been able to access either the page before (or after) this in the census. Obviously I'm not very good at identifying surnames, either!

We think there was a lady living at the corner house who owned a garden which ran across the back to the end house at the other end which had it's own garden. That was a mouthful

That sort of thing could happen quite often back then, couldn't it? Odd laws and boundaries!

Still odd that the 1890s map should should differently demarcated gardens, though.

O.H. was born in one of the cottages and the land behind definitely did not come with it. It was then, in the late 40's that the lady from the end cottage owned along the back-------ha ha a right northern term---along the back, or up our back
