Hill End Estate

Nelson Co-operative Society Purchase Valuable Property.

There was a very large and influential company present at the Bull Hotel, Burnley, on Monday afternoon, when Mr. John Grimshaw offered by auction the Hill End Estate, Briercliffe. The estate consists of the following: The residence known as "Hill End," and the messuage, farm, and tenement known as "Hill End Farm," also the cottage adjoining the farmhouse and the block of seven cottages near thereto; "Higher House Farm," with the two cottages adjacent to the farmhouse; the two farms known as "Lane House Farm" and "Higher Fennymoor Foot Farm"; the farm called "Pighole Farm," with the two cottages thereon, also the detached cottage on the northerly side of the farm known as Fern Valley. The estate comprises a total of 128a. 2r. 37p In opening the sale Mr. Grimshaw referred to the long association of Mr. Smith and his family with the district and its indutrial life, and the natural interest which the sale had evoked. The estate was offered in one lot, for which the bidding commenced at £6,000. After some spirited competition, it was eventually knocked down to the Nelson Co-operative Society at the sum of £8,625. Messrs. Hartley and Pilgrim, Colne, were the solicitors acting in the matter.

I mentioned this cutting to Roger. He couldn't remember all of the Estate properties. I have sent it to him this morning. Maybe he will do something in the Newsletter or his Peek into the Past articles on Hill End?
