Rex, I see you are on line and you are good at this sort of thing. Have you seen the name Joseph shortened to John. I have an ancestor whose father is listed as John on his baptism record, but the only possible marriage I can find for his father is of a Joseph. Has anyone else got any thoughts on this? Gill

Hi Gill. I've seen Jno which is either John or Jonathan, can't remember which ir even if it could be either.
I've seen Joseph shortened to Jos.

Gill,

I don't remember any instance of Joseph being shortened to Jno. Jos could also be Joshua.

Of course a parish clerk or minister or even a civil registrar could get a name wrong.
