Does anybody recognise the name of the place in the second line? It's Bolton somewhere, I think. Thanks
Rob

Though the writing does not look like it....if you say it....it could be Tottington.

I came to this conclusion by looking at google maps for somewhere near to Bolton (not an area I'm familiar with) beginning with T and ending in ton

yes, I did consider Tottington. Although I agree, it doesn't immediately look like it.

Looks like Torrington. Is there a Torrington, Lancs?

I think it is Torrington, there is a Torrington Avenue, Helliwell, Bolton.

it does also look like Torrington. I'm googling about to see if I can find anything on that. the person in question usually lists their place of birth as Bolton on other census', so I'm assuming it's Bolton. Maybe an old map would be handy.

i've just looked up the same person's 1911 entry and they have completed that as Bury being the place of birth, just to make things more confusing! On the positive side of things I've just stumbled across an 1881 census for Todmorden work house where one inmate is listed as born in Torrington, Lancashire. So Torrington did exist :)

Can't be Tottington because the clearly read, "t" is quite tall and the mystery letters which look like "s"s are short.

I wondered if it might have been someone with a speech impedement who said the place name Spacer....said quickly enough and to someone who did perhaps not know the spelling of the place, there is a very small possibility that it could be Tottington. I couldn't see anywhere else in that region that came close to the place name.

Will we ever know for sure

It's the 2nd name at that household so I assume it's the wife.
If so, I'd use Freebmd to look for the marriage so as to get her maiden name, then ditto for birth.
Most women marry in their home district.
