Cockden Bridge
I spent my childhood (1950s & 60s,) walking down to Cockden.
Why is there a weir at Cockden Bridge? http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/772101

Thr weir may be there to protect the foundations of the bridge's abutments. If there were no weir, the river would sooner or later erode back upstream and undermine them.

Charon is right. I have recently learnt that weirs were built to protect the foundations of the bridge.

That answers as question I've been asking myself for a long time - why there is a weir just upstream of the bridge in Padiham.

Early maps show Cockden Bridge with a ford. This was positioned slightly downstream of the current weir position. Are you sure the weir wasn't to flatten it out a bit to create a level ford bed?
