Prisoners for Debt

Notices by persons imprisoned for debt in Chester, Durham, Exeter, Halton, Lancaster, Oxford, Richmond, Ruthin, Southampton, Whitechapel and Worcester, (5876), 9-12 August 1720, of their intention to apply for discharge, pursuant to the Act for the Relief of Insolvent Debtors. The notices give full name, previous residence, and occupation.

Lincolnshire and Rutland Cottagers

In 1801 Robert Gourlay published the results of a detailed survey that he had made in person travelling from village to village in Lincolnshire and Rutland, examining the state of the cottagers in each parish. After a general description of the local agriculture, he listed the cottagers by name, and, where possible, recorded the acreage of their holdings, annual rent, the number of persons in each family, and their stock, giving numbers of cows, pigs, horses &c. There are returns from Appleby, Ashby cum Fenby, Aubourn, Barnetby le Wold, Belton, Bigby, Braunston, Burley, Cherry Willingham, Colsterworth, Croxton, Egleton, Empingham, Fillingham, Fiskerton, Glentworth, Grayingham, Great Limber, Greetham (Rutland), Hambleton, Harlaxton, Hemswell, Horbling, Humberstone, Ingham, Irby upon Humber, Keelby, Kirmington, Langham, Lyndon, Melton Ross, Normanby, Normanby in Burton, Osbournby, Owmby, Reepham, Riby, Roxby, Saxby, Scredington, Swallow, Winteringham and

Commanders of Calcutta Trading Vessels

The official list of trading vessels belonging to the port of Calcutta as of 31 December 1811 gives each vessel's name, the name of the commander, tonnage, and (occasionally) where built.

Buckinghamshire Poll Book

The poll of the freeholders of Buckinghamshire at the election of two knights of the shire to serve in Parliament, taken at Aylesbury 5, 6, 7 and 9 May 1831. The candidates were the Marquis of Chandos, John Smith esquire, and Pascoe Grenfell esquire. This poll book sets out the names of the voters in alphabetical order hundred by hundred and parish by parish. The freeholders' full names are stated, surname first, and the place of their abode (often elsewhere). The right hand column records their votes. The qualification for suffrage in the counties was the possession of a freehold estate worth more than 40s a year.

The return of prisoners imprisoned in Berkshire County Gaol at Reading for contempt of court gives full name; when committed; by what authority; cause of committal; and date of discharge.

Soldiers' Balances Unclaimed

The War Office, under 'The Regimental Debts Act, 1863' compiled and published lists of names of deceased soldiers whose personal estate was held by the Secretary of State for War for distribution amongst the Next of Kin or others entitled. These lists give full name (surname first), rank, regiment, and the amount of the estate unclaimed. During 1882 new lists CXLI to CL relating to recent deaths were issued, as well as republications of lists XCI to CL from previous years showing details of balances still remaining unclaimed.

Imperial Service Medal: On Retirement

The Central Chancery of the Orders of Knighthood at St James's Palace announced these awards by king George VI of the Imperial Service Medal to officers of the Home Civil Service on their retirement. The names are arranged alphabetically by surname (in capitals) and christian names, with office or rank in the service.

Berkshire Poll Book

The poll of the freeholders of Berkshire on an election of two representatives in Parliament, taken at Abingdon on Monday 12 October 1812 and fourteen following days. The candidates were Charles Dundas esquire (D: 1717 votes), the Hon. Richard Neville (N: 1374), and William Hallett esquire (H: 525). This poll book sets out the names of the voters in alphabetical order parish by parish. After the name of the parish or township, the name of the hundred in which it lay is given in italics. The freeholders' full names are stated, surname first, and the place of their abode (often elsewhere). The right hand column records their votes. The qualification for suffrage in the counties was the possession of a freehold estate worth more than 40s a year.

1820-1823

Vagrants in Devon

The return of persons committed under the Vagrant Laws to the Prisons and Houses of Correction in Devon includes lists of vagrants committed to Bideford Prison, the Prisons and Houses of Correction for the Town of Great Torrington, and the Gaol at Southmolton. Full names are given, with a brief description of the acts of vagrancy, such as wandering abroad, begging, prostitution, abandoning family, idle and disorderly, &c.

Merchants, Bankers, Shipowners and Traders of London

The public prints of December 1834 carried this loyal address to king William IV of merchants, bankers, shipowners, traders and others connected with the city of London, requesting 'permission at the present juncture to address your Majesty for the purpose of renewing the expression of our dutiful and loyal attachment to your Majesty’s person and crown. Deeply sensible of the practical blessings we have hitherto enjoyed under our wisely mixed constitution of King, Lords, and Commons, and feeling that the free and legitimate exercise of the Royal prerogative forms an integral part of that constitution (as essential to the maintenance of our own liberties as to the power and dignity of the Throne), we beg humbly to assure your Majesty of our determination steadfastly to uphold the same by every means in our power.

'Feeling, in common with all classes of your Majesty’s subjects, the deep importance of applying to all real abuses, wherever they may be found, a wholesome and timely correction, and of effecting in our excellent institutions every improvement of which careful examination and experience may prove them to be susceptible, we desire further dutifully to express our entire confidence that these useful purposes will ever occupy your Majesty’s paternal care. Nor can we permit ourselves to believe that the importance of these objects will be less apparent to those to whom the powers of government have been recently intrusted.'

Maryport and Carlisle Railway Shareholders

The return of the railway subscription contracts deposited in the Private Bill Office lists the shareholders in the Maryport and Carlisle Railway, subscribers to shares towards the £180,000 estimated expense of the project. The list gives full name of each subscriber (or surname with initials), number of shares, and value.

The Home Office issued monthly lists of aliens to whom Certificates of Naturalization or Readmission to British Nationality had been granted by the Secretary of State under the provisions of 33 Vic. cap. 14 and been registered in the Home Office pursuant to the act during each previous month. These notices, from January to December 1910, refer to naturalizations from December 1909 to November 1910. The lists give full name, surname first; country of origin; date of taking the oath of allegiance; and place of residence. An asterisk indicates that the person was currently serving in a British ship.

Infants in Irish Workhouses

Return, “with Christian and Surname of each, of Infants Born in Irish Workhouses, or Admitted thereto when Healthy under Twelve Months Old, and attempted to be Reared therein during the Years 1872 to 1874, showing what has since become of them”. The returns from each poor law union workhouse give: Christian and Surname of Infant Born in the Workhouse, or Admitted Healthy, under Twelve Months; Year; and whether discharged, healthy, in hospital, or dead. Dental Students

The annual Dentists Register, 'Printed and Published under the Direction of The General Council of Medical Education and Registration of the United Kingdom, Pursuant to an Act Passed in the Year XLI & XLII Victoriæ, Cap. XXXIII, Entitled An Act to Amend the Law relating to Dental Practioners' included a section listing all current dental students. This gives full name (surname first, in capitals); preliminary examination in Arts, with date thereof; date of registration; place and date of commencement of medical or dental study, as certified by a master, or a teacher, or an official in a medical or dental school or hospital. In a few cases there is a dagger before the name: this indicates students from before 1 October 1885 (when it still was only optional) who took the subject of Elementary Mechanics.

Pleas of the Venison in the king's park of Guildford heard at Guildford in the quindene of Midsummer in the 53rd year of the reign of king Henry III, 8 July 1269, recorded in Public Record Office Forest Proceedings, Treasury of Receipt, No. 194, were selected, transcribed (the Latin extended) and translated by G. Birmingham Directory

The Birmingham Directory; or, Merchant and Tradesman's Useful Companion
included this 'alphabetical list of the principal inhabitants, their
respective trades, and places of abode'. Printed and sold by Pearson and
Rollason in 1776, and reprinted by Charles E. Scarse, librarian of
Birmingham Library, in 1896. Full names are generally given, surname
first, with trade and address, including house numbers.

1822-1845

South Eastern Railway Shareholders

The return of the railway subscription contracts deposited in the
Private Bill Office lists the shareholders in the South Eastern, or
Ashford and Canterbury Railway, subscribers to 2347 shares amounting to
£117,350 towards the £225,000 estimated expense of the project. The list
gives full name of each subscriber (or surname with initials), address,
designation (occupation), number of shares, and amount.

East Kent Poll Book

The poll for two knights of the shire to represent the Eastern Division
of the county of Kent in parliament was taken 18 July 1865, the
candidates being Sir Edward Cholmeley Dering, bart., (D), Sir Brook
William Bridges, bart., (B), and Sir Norton Joseph Knatchbull, bart.,
(K). This poll book lists all registered electors, whether they voted or
not, by electoral district (Ashford, Canterbury, Dover, Faversham,
Hythe, Margate, Ramsgate, Romney, Sandwich, Sheerness, Sittingbourne,
Whitstable and Wingham) and then by township or parish within which lay
the property whereby the electors had qualified. The lefthand column
gives sequential number in the whole volume; then follows the elector's
full name, surname first, and his address (often elsewhere); and on the
righthand side for whom he voted. When the elector was qualified in
duplicate the vote is recorded opposite to the number upon which he
claimed to vote at the polling booth, and wherever his name occurs
elsewhere a refere
nce is made, immediately after the address, to the number where his
vote is recorded, with the initials of the candidates for whom he voted.
Duplicate voters who were dead at the time of the election, or did not
vote, are printed in italics to signify that they did not vote, or are
stated to be dead once only; and wherever the names of such electors
occur elsewhere references are made to the numbers where alone they are
reckoned in the abstract of the poll as dead or not voting. Whenever a
number only, without any other reference, follows the address, it
denotes that at the number referred to, the elector is entered as not
voting.

Godalming Tithe Apportionment

This extract from the summaries of the apportionment and altered
apportionments of the rent-charge in lieu of tithes in the parish of
Godalming, Surrey, was attached as a schedule to the grant of the same
by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners to the incumbent of the perptual
curacy of Busbridge, under the provisions of 29 & 30 Vic. cap. 111, s.
5.

Inhabitants of the City of London

In August 1780 this loyal petition was made to king George III,
subscribed by 2800 'Liverymen, Freemen, and Others, Inhabitants of the
City of London', expressing grateful thanks 'for that Protection, which,
by the Wisdom, Vigilance, and Activity of your Majesty in Council, was
so seasonably given to us, at a Time when our Lives, Property, and every
Thing dear to us, were in such imminent Danger, from the Violence of the
most outrageous Banditti that ever existed.' This refers to the Gordon
Riots, caused by a bill which Parliament introduced in 1778 to repeal
certain harsh laws against Roman Catholics: in June 1780 a mob
protesting against this repeal assembled in London, forced its way into
the House of Commons, attacked Newgate prison releasing many prisoners,
and destroyed a great deal of property, until dispersed by the military.

1832
Liverpool Poll Book

A poll for the election of Members of Parliament for the Borough of
Liverpool, between William Ewart esquire (E), Lord Viscount Sandon (S),
Thomas Thornely esquire (T) and Major-General Sir Howard Douglas,
baronet (D), took place on 12 and 13 December 1832. The poll book lists
all voters with full name (surname first), occupation, address, and
initials indicating for whom they voted. The lists are in six sections:
Everton, Kirkdale, the parish of Liverpool, Toxteth Park, West Derby,
and Liverpool burgesses and freemen. All householders of property worth
£10 a year of more were entitled to vote.

1854
British casualties at Inkerman

Sebastopol in the Crimea was the great Russian naval arsenal on the
Black Sea. A combined assault by British, French and Turkish troops
resulted in the reduction of Sebastopol and led to the Treaty of Paris
of 27 April 1856, guaranteeing the independence of the Ottoman Empire.
In the battle of Inkerman, of November 1854, the Russian troops made an
ultimately unsuccessful attack on the allied army. In December the War
Office issued lists of soldiers killed and wounded at Inkerman: there
are separate returns for 2 to 6 November, 7 to 20 November, and 21 to 26
November, as well as one for soldiers missing, and one for members of
the Naval Brigade killed and wounded.

London Joint Stock Bank Shareholders

Copy of the return by the London Joint Stock Bank to the Inland Revenue
listing the 'persons of whom the Company or partnership consists',
pursuant to 7 & 8 Vic. cap. 32: giving full name (surname first),

Psychologists

The Journal of Mental Science for 1906 included a full list of members
of the Medico-Psychological Association of Great Britain and Ireland,
giving year of joining, full name (surname first), qualifications, and
address: an asterisk indicates a member who joined between 1841 and
1855. There is also a separate list with full name (surname first) but
no address, of those who had passed the Examination for the Certificate
of Efficiency in Psychological Medicine, entitling them to append M.P.C.
(Med.-Psych. Certif.) to their names.

1916

Huntingdonshire Freeholders
'The King's Majestie's Ayde, to make the most high and noble Prince, the
King's Majestie's eldest sonne, knight' was levied from freeholders in
the sixth year of the reign of king James I and VI. This is a copy of
the return for Huntingdonshire, printed in 1774, giving the name of each
contributor, often with address or indicating for which lands in the
county the money was due, together with the amount raised.

1818
North Staffordshire Directory
The Staffordshire General and Commercial Directory was published by W.
Parson and T. Bradshaw in 1818 in sections, the first seven relating to
the north of the county: 1. Newcastle-under-Lyme; 2. Golden Hill,
Tunstall &c. (including Talk'o'th'Hill, Red Street, Chesterton,
Greenfield, Sandiford, New Field and Brown Hills); 3. Burslem &c.
(including Longport, Cobridge and Hot Lane); 4. Hanley and Shelton; 5.
Stoke, Etruria and Penkhull; 6. Lane End &c. (including Fenton and Lane
Delph); 7. Leek. In each section the traders are listed alphabetically
under surname, with occupation and address.

Oxford Poll Book
The poll of the freemen and electors of the City of Oxford was taken 17
November 1868, the candidates being the Rt Hon Edward Cardwell (C),
William Vernon Harcourt esq., Q.C. (H), and James Parker Deane, Esq.,
Q.C., D.C.L. (D). This poll book, published by the Oxford Chronicle,
lists all the voters alphabetically by parish or township, freemen's
names being preceded by an asterisk. Postal addresses are given,
including street numbers, and in the case of freemen occupation is
usually given. Lodgers are listed separately at the end of each section.
The areas covered are: All Saints, St Aldate, Binsey, St Clement,
Cowley, St Ebbe, St Giles, Headington, North Hincksey, South Hincksey,
Holywell, Iffley, St John, St Martin, St Mary Magdalen, St Mary the
Virgin, St Michael, St Peter in the East, St Peter le Bailey, and St
Thomas; and there is also a list of Out of Town (non-resident) freemen

Mining Fatalities
The fourteen Inspectors of Mines for the United Kingdom of Great Britain
and Ireland made separate annual reports, each including a tabular
account of fatal mining accidents within his area, giving date;
sequential number of accident for the area for the year; the name of the
mine; where situate; the owner's or agent's name; the full name of the
person killed; his occupation; age; cause of death, and remarks. There
are in all fifteen tables, for: Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and part of
Somerset; Cumberland, Northumberland and Furness; Ireland; the Midlands;
North and East Lancashire; North Staffordshire, Cheshire and most of
Shropshire; North Wales (including an adjoining part of Shropshire) and
the Isle of Man; Western Scotland; the rest of Scotland; South Durham,
Westmorland and the North Riding of Yorkshire; Gloucestershire,
Herefordshire, Wiltshire, Monmouthshire and adjoining parts of South
Wales; South Staffordshire and Worcestershire (the Black Country); the
rest of South
Wales; western Lancashire; and Yorkshire (other than the North Riding)
and Lincolnshire.

1917
Naturalizations
The Home Office issued monthly lists of aliens to whom Certificates of
Naturalization or Readmission to British Nationality had been granted by
the Secretary of State and whose oaths of allegiance had been registered
in the Home Office. These notices, from January to December 1917, refer
to naturalizations from December 1916 to November 1917. The lists give
full name, surname first; country of origin; date of taking the oath of
allegiance; place of residence; and occupation. An dagger indicates
re-admission to British nationality.

1930
Aviators' Certificates
Lists of certificates granted by the Royal Aero Club of the United
Kingdom to newly-qualified aviators of powered aircraft: giving
certificate number, full name, and name of his or her aero club.
Certificate numbers 9000 to 9080 and 9203 to 9637.

1950
Imperial Service Medal
The Central Chancery of the Orders of Knighthood at St James's Palace
announced these awards by king George VI of the Imperial Service Medal
to members of the Home Civil Service. The names are arranged
alphabetically by surname (in capitals) and christian names, with office
or rank in the service.
