'To air' (cold water usually) : to warm up a little.

We have 'aired' water...not hot but not cold. Do you think it's northern then Rex?

I bought a book at the weekend 'The Lancashireman's Dictionary'. Will have to have a good root throught it later to see if there is anything really obscure (there is bound to be!)

Airing cupboard??? We all have one I think.

But where does the description 'airy fairy' re. a person's casual and indifferent attitude with all 'air's and graces' come into it :?

It's in an old book I saw recently on Rochdale and Rossendale words (Cunliffe I think), but not in the standard work on Craven dialect.
Now it was my brother-in-law who used it recently, and he is from Burnley, but has Rossendale ancestry. I guess it it only northern anyway.

My grandfather used to say 'air' meaning to take something from ice cold to tepid....as in a cold drink to room temperature.
"Tha needs t'air that un afore ye drink et.....cald stuff is bad for t'ealth"
