I am seeking information relating to Abel and Margaret Burrows born circa 1795 and 1805 respectively.
Both resided in The Square in Little Marsden

Also any information on the Burrows' who represented Nelson (Seedhill) Cricket Club

Welcome to the site Scout.

I don't think we have many Burrows researchers but you never know who might drop in

Thanks for the welcome. Its good to be part of the Forum.

Burrows has been a huge family name in the Gt and Little Marsden/Nelson/Burnley/Briercliffe areas for a very long time. I shall wait in hope that there are others who may share in my interest

I'm "burrowing" into Burrows, too, although I don't think I'll get very far. There are some excellent resources available through this site, I've discovered already. Do a "search" (and you'll get totally sidetracked onto fascinating byways) - I do recall seeing those names and address on some census records here, when I was seeking a (one of too many) Mary Burrows, merely with the information that she gave birth to a daughter Tabitha in May 1840. Couldn't identify her, of course, but there's a lot of helpful stuff and interesting stuff here. Happy hunting - and let us know if/when you discover information, it does a lot to encourage those of us who are floundering.

Hello Scout, I too have a branch of the Burrows family in my "tree", and strangely an Abel Burrows, but he predates yours. I havn't found his birth but I believe he married Mary Eaverley in St Barts Colne on 22.4.1716. I know they had children John, born 1717, James ,born 1723 and Mary ,born in 1725, but there may have been others. As Abel is an unusual name I would think that there is a family connection. My most recent Burrows is Ann (Nanny) born 1778 who married John Hargreaves in Colne in 1808. Good luck with your search. Gill

I have the Registers of Parish Church of Colne 1599-1653 and there are no Burrows or Eaverleys there at that time that I can find.
There is a marriage on familysearch IGI for Abel Burrows in 1813 to Mary Whalley 27th Dec. batch no.M162353 Source call no. 1471065

You probably have this---1841 census as written/spelt
Name Age
Abel Burrows 50
Mary Burrows 45
Nathan Burrows 15
Jenathon Burrows 12
Sarah Burrows 9
Jonadab Burrows 6
Abel is a grocer but I cannot read the address --- looks like Lomas Row.

1851 as written/spelt
Name Age
Abel Burrows 58
Margret Burrows 23
Sophia Burrows 20
Cosiah Burrows 16
Edmondson Burrows 11
Living in the Square, Little Marsden, Abel is a widower and a weaver.

1861 as written/spelt
Name Age
Abel Burrows 68
Charles Burrows 37
James Burrows 35
Sophia Burrows 30
Edmondson Burrows 21
Richard Burrows 13
Edward Burrows 8
John Thomas Burrows 3
Abel is a cotton weaver, they are living in The Square still, and the others are sons or daughters----I think some should be preceded by grand.

1871 as written/spelt
Abel Burrows 82
Driver Edmondson 40
Sophia Edmondson 40
John Thomas Borrows 13
Irving Burrows 9
Charley Burrows 4
Mariah Burrows 2
Willie Edmondson 3 Months
Abel is "superanuated"?? Sophia is his daughter, Driver is son in law and the rest grandchildren. They are all in The Square.

Let me know if you need any more

Gloria

Hello Gloria, I've just looked up the Abel Burrows marriage. I have a photocopy of the original page, and I'm pretty sure that the name the librarian interpreted as Eaverly is in fact Coverley. If this is so I think I've found her baptism on OPC. Gill

Hi Gloria and Gill,

Thanks for the information you have posted.
My Abel is the one married to Margaret and resided at The Square in Little Marsden.
I currently have no information to verify if the pre-dated Abel you refer to is part of my family.
All the census entries I already have

Thanks again
Scout
