I have been researching the Nutter family. James Nutter & his wife Mary Alice ( nee Rushton ) lived at Scarrs Farm. He is one of the sons of Edmund Nutter who lived at Bent Head Farm, address Haggate in early censuses, but I am told is Brierfield. A playing field is on the site. I wonder if anyone knows if Scarrs Farm is still there. James had three sons killed in WW1 and one who got a medal for gallantry.
I have tried to attach a mystery photo from our family collection, but do not know whether I have done it correctly ! Assuming it is there, this picture shows a farmer, I think. I wonder if anyone recognises the location. It could be my GGrandfather, John Nutter, who farmed Bent Head or maybe his brother James at Scarrs. The stone stile is very unusual to my eye and maybe it is still there.

We don't know where that stone is, sorry. Don't know where Scarrs Farm is, but Scarrs House is off Nelson Rd, Briercliffe and the photo wasn't taken there.

I have a rhyme related to the thornton family about henry thornton born 1750. regarding scarrs farm. - Arthur of Jeremy of Tom of James of Dick of Harry of Tayles of Scarrs farm. I wonder what the link is regarding scarrs farm to the Thornton family

I have just found another copy of this mystery photo of ours. On the back is written 'The Stocks Downham '. I believe there is a Downham near Clitheroe and wonder if anyone has seen this. I noticed that there is a slot on the right hand side which could have been for a cross bar. I now think that this person is my grandfather's brother, Cyril Smith Ellis, born in Clitheroe.

Yes it is Downham, near Clitheroe. The stocks and building are still there, but the tree isn`t. They are situated just below the Assheton Arms and the Church. If you go to google maps and type in Downham Clitheroe, zoom in, then drop the little man right onto the "A" you should see them. They are at the junction of Chatburn Road and Twiston Lane.

The past BBC series ' Born & Bred' was filmed there and now - I think I recognise some Downham landmarks in 'The Secret of Crickley Hall'.

You are right about Crickley Hall, the village is Downham but the hall is elsewhere. The church and churchyard are definitely Downham. If you watch it tonight you may catch a glimpse of the stocks.

The hall is Bowden Hall, Chapel-en-le-Frith in the Peak District. I am recording all three before watching. Unless I run out of recordings
