Looking/hoping to connect with anyone with info on a John Fielding Smith Hart. I believe he was the son of James Hart and Alice Smith. James died and Alice married someone by the name of Rycroft.

John F S Hart married Sarah Sutcliffe on 4th Sep 1900 at Angle St Baptist Church. It is this that I am interested in. I think John and Sarah had at least one son, Richard in 1901.any info gratefully received.

Since posting this query back in the very early days of the forum, I have found more information for this couple.

The 1901 census is as follows. Alice Rycroft is the mother of John F S Hart, she remarried.

RG13/3864 folio77 pg 9
80 Hebrew Street
Alice Rycroft H W 52 Grocer Burnley
John F S Hart S M 23 Cotton Warp Dresser Burnley
Daniel Hart S S 19 Cotton Twister Burnley
Sarah Hart DLaw M 25 Cotton Weaver Burnley
Richard Hart GS 11m Burnley

In 1911, they were living at Claughton Street amd have 4 children - Richard (1901), Alice (1903), Ernest (1905) & Elizabeth (1907).

I believe these may be the marriage index entries for the children. Although Hart was a popular name throughout Lancashire, it doesn't appear to have been as common in Burnley

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1925
HART Richard DRACUP Elizabeth Burnley, St Andrew Preston CE107/5/362

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1928
HART Alice CHERRY Alwyn Burnley, Hanover United Methodist Church (Old Hall St) Preston CL=RA/3/20

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1934
HART Elizabeth KERSHAW Harry Burnley, Hanover United Methodist Church (Old Hall St) Preston CL=RA/4/1

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1934
HART Ernest DEARDEN Florence Burnley Register Office or Registrar Attended Preston RM/242/43

John FS died in 1924, probate info posted elsewhere on the site says
1924
HART John Fielden Smith of 31 Claughton-street Burnley died 17 January 1924 Administration London 30 July to Sarah Hart widow. Effects £353 14s. 3d.

I'm struggling to find a death/burial for Sarah. If the above info is correct, she is still living in 1924 and would be about 51. Early census info suggests she was born in 1873 although I never did find a relevant index entry! I have burial info for John F S, as follows:

Owner – Alice Hart

On ancestry there are a few births for Sarah Sutcliffe which could be her.

Thanks Gloria, I ordered a couple of birth certificates way back when, they turned out to be the wrong ones but it's more the death I am interested in. Curiosity and to end the line if you know what I mean

This is the only one I can find, so you have probably seen it----but it would have her born in 1851 and got a middle name.
Burial: 19 Jun 1922 Burnley Cemetery, Burnley, Lancs.

I don't think she has a middle name anywhere but I haven't discounted it. The only reason I would discount this death is the will of her husband in 1924 - his widow is his beneficiary. Could she have died first and the will not have been altered? Why couldn't she have been buried with him! :?

Hi Mel, One of the children of John Smith Hart, Alice was a great friend of my parents. I can confirm that she married Alwyn Cherry in 1928. They had one daughter. Gill

Hello Mel, I had a thought. I seem to remember that Alice's mother Sarah, lived with Alice and her husband Alwyn Cherry in Cheadle Hume Stockport, so I've checked freebmd and found a death of Sarah Hart in Stockport Cheshire in 1960 aged 84. This would make her birth 1876. Possible? Gill

Thank you thank you thank you :D I think that is most likely her. Most of what I have points to her birth year being 1876 with one or two suggesting 1873 so my thoughts were that it was somewhere mid 1870's. I always think that the first census a child appears on is usually a better guide to their age than later ones when they lose track of the years.

I had thought she perhaps died out of the area, which would also explain why I couldn't find her in Burnley Cemetery or Wheatley Lane where most of the rest of my Sutcliffes are.

Much appreciated
